Maria’s Favorite Things #7
TESTIMONY OF THE DAY
Child Testimony on Anxiety: “My four year old daughter is 10 days into eating your keto diet. I decided after repeated trouble with attitude, listening, and increasing bad anxiety to change what she was eating. Also my daughter has had very dry skin and KP which I read could be related to gluten sensitivity. I was having so much trouble controlling my daughter she was so hyper, unfocused, and having bouts of anxiety.
Anxiety with a four year old seemed so strange to me because we are very scheduled and nothing has changed in our lives. On the first day of eating Keto she was resistant but I just asked her to try everything on her plate to see what she liked. She is extremely picky. She tried everything ate a few bites of chicken and wouldn’t eat anything else.
On the next day we had a hard detox day. She asked for sugary treats all day! She even said I just need a piece of bread and pleaded with me to give her some. It is kind of sad to see a small child that addicted to sugar. Having gone through my own sugar addiction two years ago before becoming Keto I knew what she was going through but we kept up and I made her Maria’s Bread she loved it!!!! It was our first milestone on day 3 we noticed a big difference in her hyperactivity. She was much calmer and her teachers both remarked on her excellent behavior. The improvements have continued and my picky eater is trying everything now because her taste buds aren’t constantly looking for a sweet taste. I’m so happy with all of our progress and her dry skin and KP are nearly gone!!
Thanks Maria for all of your free info and books you provide to everyone!!” – Amanda

Is it ever too cold for lemonade???
Yum!
are you doing 12 days?
Lots of water and healthy treats on hand!
I would pack them for my husband(my biggest baby).
Putting this in their lunch boxes instead of having them buy milk would be helpful to keep my sons eating this way all day
I would pack it for my husband so he doesn’t give in to soda at work
My best tips on how to keep kids healthy and sugar-free = keep them well-hydrated, well-rested, and introduce healthy, nourishing foods (not junk).
Water and healthy snacks on hand!
I try to be creative in serving food in different ways. I would make the lemonade into Popsicles to enjoy as a dessert.
Having easy to grab good snacks is a must! If it isn’t easy they will grab the junk that is easy!
Best way to keep my kiddos from eating sugar is to keep them away from their grandma’s house 😂
Keeping only whole foods in the house and keeping all the packaged junk out.
We’ve removed all boxed foods from home, no more sugar, and, switched to low-carb.
Have lots of low-sugar options available. Don’t let the sugary foods in the house!
I do research on wonderful sites like this one and always try to be prepared, so no one eats or drinks impulsively.
Great idea! Parents need a better sugar-free alternative, and I want to try this, too!
Keep it fun and delicious. My kids weren’t started on a sugar free lifestyle, so expecting them to suddenly forget about candy and baked goods is wishful thinking. We make a lot of substitutions!
The very best tip for healthy and sugar free is baking from your cook books!!! We love all the healthy substitutions!!!!
Maria,
Thanks so much for all u do!! Do u have any suggestions for the kids staying away from sugar during the holidays while at family or friends?
Substitute non-sugar fun items as much as possible.
Home cooking and pre-planning!
Making time to cook REAL food for my family…nothing processed or packaged! 🙂
Best thing is to keep the sugar and junk out of your house and to keep introducing healthy alternatives. Hopefully their tastebuds will learn to prefer the less sweet options.
I always have non-sugar items available for snacks…and I make sugar free lemonade all the time….having juice boxes would be convenient on those really busy days or when we are out and about. Its really scary how much sugar is in most of the kids’ drinks.
Maria, I can’t believe how much your boys have grown since I’ve been reading your blog!! They are just precious!! I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!!
By keeping sugar free snacks made up ahead of time, so we can grab a treat when we want something “sweet”. Thanks to all your wonderful recipes i can do that!
I try to keep them healthy by introducing as many new vegetables/fruits as I can, and continuing to offer them the ones they will eat
Your kids are adorable!
I’m not a kid, well maybe one at heart, but I need lemonade every day for prevention of kidney stones and I’d love to try this.
Plan. Its when you are prepared you go off track with kids. They are always hungry and thirsty.
I don’t have any children, but to keep myself sugar-free I make sure to always have some “healthified” chocolates in my fridge!
I try and try to make healthified things for my kids…it all depends if they like it or not. A good tip is to have them take part in preparing a meal or food. I buy xylitolsuckers for treats and use stur or sweet drops brand drops with water in place of juice.
I keep sugary foods out of the house, mostly, and use stevia and erythritol instead as sweeteners. Thankfully, over the years, my girls (now teens) are totally on board with this and eat even more healthy than I do!
I love the idea of making this into popsicles! I’m going to serve it to my grandchildren!
My kids would love to try these!
I used to make my own lemonade with stevia this looks really good and a great option to give my grandkids.
Oh this is incredible! I was just last night looking at Juice boxes and cringing at the sugar in them! My kids don’t want water in their lunch box…..I know they drink what I give them but a juice box every now and then is okay. And I’m excited to try this! We do a lot of smoothies with natural sugar in them from fruit, etc.
The heck with the kids! I buy this for me! Been begging them to make it in large cartons so I can just pour a glass when I want one.
Keep soda pop out of the house and make healthy snacks, along with healthy meals
I make delicious snacks and desserts they can’t say no to!
Teaching my younger siblings to like eating healthy!(:
Keeping healthy food in the house and making meal preparation a priority.
Maria, thanks for all you do and for all the recipes and information you share with us! Keep up the great work!
i try to keep lots of fresh fruit in the house. i don’t buy pop or sugar cereals
My kids have never been sweet eaters. I just don’t buy carbage and always have raw veggies with ranch, and cheese available. That’s been their go-to forever!
Your boys are so freaking adorable. I would like to try this lemonade on my girl. 🙂
My younger son is addicted to sugar! I would love for him to try this!!!
We very rarely eat out and I let them participate in what they would like to eat at home and always find “healthified” versions of what they want so they feel like they get to participate in what we eat.
Can’t get these locally, so we’d love to try them!
Why aren’t you posting recipes any more?
This is tough, I sub hard boiled eggs for a lot of snacks and that seems to work well.
Keep healthful treats from your ketogenic cookbook in the freezer so when they want candy, yoy give them healthified keto versions!
I keep healthy treats on hand and always trying one of your recipes for my family to enjoy!
Having healthy snacks available (fat bombs made with coconut butter, etc) and flavored stevia drops.
Try to be prepared! We have a small cache of sf-goodies that the kids can take along with them when they’re going somewhere that sugar-laden treats will be served. Special things they don’t get everyday- like moon cheese, pork clouds, chocorite bars & flavored seltzer. I’d love to add some Love & Leaf to that stash 😉
I try to feed my kids good amounts of fat so they are not hungry, but bake almost every day one of your recipes, whether it is your “cereal”, bread, fat bombs, or treats…I always have something on hand. Still having trouble getting my 4 year old on board, he doesn’t like erithytol I don’t think, any ideas? It’s definitely hard in this world to go sugar free with the kids, they are being bombarded constantly. I have a special needs son and have devoted so much to making sure his diet is the healthiest possible and am doing my best with the other kids, it is just hard when they are more aware of all the sugary treats out there!
I added fat to their diet.
I don’t have kids so I don’t really have to worry about this 😀
My kids are 18 and 21, and off at college. However, I have refused to buy bread to keep at the house, I refuse to keep sugar, cereal, snacks(poptarts, nuggets, cookies) in my house. They can have all the green tea (ICE!omg), water, and my food they want, and my daughter has decided that my pizza is better than hers. So It’s amazing what you can convince semi adults of when you take away most of their choices!
k
I’m trying to re-educate myself! (And I don’t keep much for sweets / bread around the house.
Home cooked meals! Plenty of water and eating real food!
As a grandmother, I am concerned about the amount of sugar my 7 y/o granddaughter consumes in a day. I try to find food and beverages that she will enjoy but more importantly, that are healthy for her.
I keep my kids healthy and sugar-free by not having any 😉
I am still trying to figure that one out. My oldest is not really a sugar person, on occasion but rather veggies, the middle, decent would want sugar maybe 1-2xs a day but my youngest could take an IV of pure sugar if she could!
I am still not very successful on the sweet side. Try to convince my hubby and son to like other sweetners than sugar. Made them watch the movie “That sugar film”
this lemonade really is delicious
We would love to send this to school for our kids!
Variety, and yummy looking foods.
To keep my kids healthy & sugar free it takes prep & planning. I try to portion out snacks & treats ahead of time so we can grab and go
Homemade popsicles are a favorite!
It’s hard, but I keep trying to find more and more recipes he likes that are healthy. It does help that his favorite food in the world is medium rare steak with butter! (he’s 8)
This might help my sugar addicted Jr. Higher steer clear of soda at lunch!
I use a lot of the Stur stevia flavoring in water. Would love to try this lemonade!
I find out what my kids are craving and make it paleo! Your recipes are a great help with this.
Tip: always plan ahead 😉
Having healthy options readily available
It’s always a good time for lemonade. You can even heat it up and drink it hot!
Yum year round lemonade. What could be betteer
We do not keep sugary foods in the house.
Having options and explaining why we eat how we do helps.
Start early with simple clean foods,
we are ALL low carb! my son is slowly transitioning, he just turned 4!
It’s great to have a drink that be packed in my granddaughter’s lunch that is healthy and looks like everyone else’s drink boxes.
This would be awesome to try for my husband!
Planning ahead for meals, snacks and even for parties keeps our family from consuming unhealthy food.
I make cupcakes, fudge, cake etc. and we eat nuts for snacks. Can you tell we have a sweet tooth? I would like to try the lemonade. Sounds yummy.
I like to have fresh fruit for them to snack on. The lemonade looks great.
Would avoid sugary drinks!
We drink hibiscus tea
