How to Make High Protein Ice Cream: Dairy Free and Low Calorie
I love ice cream but the ice cream I eat is high in protein, dairy free and low in calories!
Ice cream does not have to be a bowl of sugar, heavy cream, and empty calories. With the right ingredients, you can turn a traditional dessert into something creamy, satisfying, and packed with protein while keeping calories surprisingly low.
One of my favorite ways to do this is by combining Further Food Collagen, Equip Prime Protein, Jay Robb Egg White Protein, and whole eggs in a variety of ways. Each ingredient brings something different to the recipe. Instead of relying on one protein powder to do everything, this combination gives the ice cream complete protein, collagen-rich amino acids, better texture, nutrients from whole eggs, and enough protein to make dessert genuinely satisfying.
The result is a dairy-free, high-protein ice cream that tastes indulgent but works much harder for your body than traditional ice cream.
Why Combine Different Protein Sources?
Protein powders are not all nutritionally identical.
Collagen has a very different amino acid profile from egg white protein or beef protein. Whole eggs bring nutrients that isolated powders do not. Combining these ingredients allows each one to contribute its strengths.
| Ingredient | Main Role in the Recipe | Nutritional Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Equip Prime Protein | Complete protein + creamy body | All essential amino acids |
| Jay Robb Egg White Protein | Lean complete protein | Very high protein with little fat |
| Further Food Collagen | Collagen-rich protein + texture | Glycine, proline and hydroxyproline |
| Whole Eggs | Creaminess, emulsification and nutrition | Complete protein, choline and micronutrients |
Rather than asking which protein is “best,” I like using them together.
Equip Prime Protein Provides Complete Beef Protein
Equip Prime Protein is made from grass-fed beef and provides approximately 21 grams of complete protein per serving.
Complete protein means it contains all nine essential amino acids that the body cannot manufacture on its own. These amino acids are needed to maintain and repair muscle, produce enzymes and signaling proteins, support immune function, and continually rebuild tissues throughout the body.
This makes Equip especially valuable in a high-protein ice cream because it does more than improve the macros. It helps give the dessert a meaningful complete-protein foundation.
Equip Also Adds Collagen and Gelatin Naturally
One of the interesting things about Equip Prime is that it naturally contains collagen and gelatin in addition to its complete protein.
Those proteins can also be helpful from a culinary standpoint. Frozen desserts need body and structure or they quickly become icy and thin.
Using a protein that contributes a richer texture can help make low-calorie ice cream feel much closer to traditional ice cream even when you dramatically reduce heavy cream and other calorie-dense ingredients.
That means you get better nutrition and a better dessert.
Jay Robb Egg White Protein Packs Protein Into Very Few Calories
Egg white protein is another fantastic ingredient when the goal is maximizing protein while keeping calories low.
Jay Robb Egg White Protein currently provides about 24 grams of protein per serving, with essentially no fat. That gives it an excellent protein-to-calorie ratio.
This is particularly useful during fat loss.
Instead of adding large amounts of cream, nut butter, or other calorie-dense ingredients to make dessert satisfying, egg white protein allows you to increase the protein considerably without adding much fat.
Why Protein Density Matters
Imagine two desserts containing the same calories.
One provides only a few grams of protein.
The other provides 30, 40, or even more grams.
The higher-protein option contributes much more toward maintaining lean mass and is generally much more satisfying.
That makes protein density one of the most important considerations when creating low-calorie desserts.
Further Food Collagen Brings a Different Amino Acid Profile
Collagen should not replace complete protein. But that does not mean collagen is useless.
It simply has a different job.
Collagen is particularly rich in amino acids such as glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, which are major components of connective tissues.
Collagen is the primary structural protein found throughout:
- Skin
- Tendons
- Ligaments
- Cartilage
- Bones
- Blood vessels
- Connective tissue
Using Further Food Collagen alongside complete proteins such as Equip and egg white protein gives the recipe a broader amino acid profile than relying on collagen alone.
Collagen Helps Support Skin
Skin is heavily dependent on collagen for its structure.
Human studies of collagen peptides have found improvements in measures such as skin hydration and elasticity in populations after consistent supplementation.
That does not mean one bowl of collagen ice cream erases wrinkles. Nutrition simply does not work that way.
But putting collagen into foods you genuinely enjoy can make consistent intake much easier.
And consistency is where nutritional habits become useful.
Whole Eggs Bring Nutrition Protein Powders Cannot
Protein powders are convenient, but I still love using real food whenever possible.
Whole eggs bring much more to this ice cream than protein.
Eggs provide:
- Complete protein
- Choline
- Vitamin B12
- Selenium
- Riboflavin
- Vitamin A
- Carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin
- Fat-soluble nutrients concentrated in the yolk
Choline is especially important because it contributes to normal brain function, cell membranes, and neurotransmitter synthesis.
This is why I do not automatically remove every egg yolk simply to make a recipe lower calorie. The yolk contains much of the nutrition.
Depending on your calorie target, whole eggs can be combined with additional egg whites or egg white protein to get the best of both worlds.
Eggs Also Make Ice Cream Creamier
Egg yolks are classic ice cream ingredients for a reason.
They contain natural emulsifiers, particularly phospholipids such as lecithin, which help fat and water stay mixed together. This contributes to a smoother, richer mouthfeel.
That becomes particularly valuable when making low-calorie ice cream because you are removing much of the heavy cream that normally creates richness.
Eggs help bring that luxurious texture back without requiring enormous amounts of added fat.
Four Ingredients, Four Different Jobs
Protein Function Chart
| Ingredient | Complete Protein | Collagen-Rich | Very Lean | Helps Creaminess | Whole-Food Nutrients |
| Equip Prime | ✓ | Some naturally occurring | ✓ | ✓ | — |
| Jay Robb Egg White Protein | ✓ | — | ✓✓✓ | ✓ | — |
| Further Food Collagen | — | ✓✓✓ | ✓ | ✓ | — |
| Whole Eggs | ✓ | — | Moderate | ✓✓✓ | ✓✓✓ |
This is why I like combining them in different ways in my high protein ice cream recipes.
Equip and egg white protein provide the complete amino acids needed for muscle. Collagen adds collagen-specific amino acids. Eggs add both complete protein and whole-food nutrients.
That is a far more thoughtful approach than simply dumping several scoops of one protein powder into a recipe.
High Protein Makes Dessert More Satisfying
One of the greatest advantages of making ice cream high in protein is satiety.
Protein is generally more satiating than either carbohydrate or fat. It influences several gastrointestinal and brain signals involved in appetite regulation.
That means a high-protein ice cream can feel dramatically more satisfying than conventional low-calorie frozen desserts that simply replace sugar and fat with gums, fibers, and sweeteners.
You are giving your body something it actually needs.
Protein Helps Support Natural Satiety Hormones
Protein also stimulates gastrointestinal hormones involved in fullness, including GLP-1 and peptide YY.
This does not mean eating protein produces the pharmacological effect of GLP-1 medications. Those are completely different magnitudes and durations of signaling.
But dietary protein naturally participates in the body’s appetite-regulation system.
That is one reason a protein-centered meal or dessert can feel so much more satisfying.
Protein Helps Protect Muscle During Fat Loss
When you’re trying to lose weight, the goal should not simply be to make the number on the scale smaller.
We want to lose body fat while preserving muscle.
Any calorie deficit can potentially result in some lean-tissue loss. Adequate protein, particularly when combined with resistance training, helps provide the amino acids and mechanical stimulus necessary to protect lean mass.
This is where high-protein, low-calorie recipes become especially useful.
They allow you to create a calorie deficit without creating a protein deficit.
Traditional Ice Cream vs. High-Protein Ice Cream
| Traditional Ice Cream | High-Protein Ice Cream |
| Calories largely from sugar and fat | More calories devoted to protein |
| Relatively little protein | High protein |
| Often heavy in cream | Dairy-free |
| High added sugar | Sugar-free |
| Easy to overeat | Very satiating |
| Minimal complete protein per calorie | High protein-to-calorie ratio |
| Primarily recreational calories | Dessert with functional nutrition |
Dessert can still be dessert.
But it can also do something useful.
Dairy-Free Without Giving Up Creaminess
Another major advantage of this combination is that both Equip Prime Protein and Jay Robb Egg White Protein provide animal-based protein without requiring whey.
That allows someone avoiding dairy protein to make an extremely high-protein frozen dessert.
With eggs, collagen, beef protein, and egg white protein providing body and texture, you do not need enormous amounts of heavy cream to make the recipe satisfying.
This can dramatically improve the calorie-to-protein ratio.
A Great Option for People Who Don’t Tolerate Whey
Whey is an excellent complete protein, but not everyone tolerates it well.
Some people prefer avoiding dairy altogether, while others simply want more variety in their protein sources.
Using beef protein and egg white protein gives you two complete animal-based alternatives, while collagen adds another complementary protein source.
That makes this style of ice cream extremely versatile.
Protein Ice Cream Can Actually Support Your Goals
There is nothing wrong with enjoying traditional ice cream occasionally.
But if I can make something that tastes incredible while also providing enough protein to help support muscle, recovery, skin, connective tissue, and satiety, I am going to choose that option most of the time.
High-protein desserts make healthy eating feel less restrictive because you do not have to choose between enjoying food and reaching your goals.
You can do both.

TESTIMONY OF THE DAY
“I wanted to thank you all, especially Maria and Craig for the great work they are doing.
I started my keto lifestyle 2 years ago weighing 236 lbs and with an A1c of 6,4. Within 3 months the A1c was down to 5,6 and is now around 4,9. The last couple of months I was stuck with my weight loss and thanks to you I know why: I ate way too much dairy.
I lost 7 pounds this month and have about 30 more to loose to reach my goal weight. Today I was at my lowest weight in decades (I am 47), with 173,5 lbs!
A lifesaver for me are the egg white puddings and breakfast shakes, I was never brave enough to try them before. And my absolute favorite is the High Protein Orange Julius, which I drink when I have a craving for something sweet. So, thank you again Maria and I wish you all the best.” – Corinna
