Nature’s Medicine Cabinet

 SPICES FOR PHYTONUTRIENTS

People often tell me “everything in moderation.” But if someone has extreme Metabolic Syndrome, I feel that mantra is just as damaging as telling an alcoholic that same thing about having a glass of wine.

Animals have learned how to become fat and how to become thin. They do it in a tightly regulated way… Hibernating mammals will double their weight and fat in the fall in preparation for winter by consuming large amounts of fruits (bears eat a ton of berries). Animals develop all the features of metabolic syndrome that we do. They get fat. Their visceral fat goes up. They get fatty liver. Blood triglycerides go up. They get insulin-resistant. It’s a normal process.

NO FRUIT? How will I get nutrients? When I am asked if I eat fruits, I jokingly say of course! I eat avocado, olives, cucumber, coconut and tomatoes! But most people think I am a bit extreme when I limit most vegetable consumption for my clients too. To get keto adapted, even some low-starch vegetables may keep someone with a damaged metabolism out of ketosis. Which is why my Accelerated 30 day meal plans are so detailed with what low-starch vegetables, herbs and spices are allowed to get into ketosis fast while getting plenty of nutrients.

Fresh herbs like parsley, rosemary, oregano and basil are the most nutrient rich plants you can consume. For example, everyone thinks spinach is the perfect food, but fresh oregano has eight times the amount of antioxidants! Sure, we don’t eat a cup of oregano like we would spinach, but it does show that a little bit provides a huge benefit. Instead of consuming fruits and starchy veggies that have fructose and raise blood sugar quickly, I suggest using herbs and spices more often in your cooking preparations.

Vanilla beans are high in phenolic compounds which are potent antioxidants (as well as anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory). Most people often use vanilla extracts rather than the bean because it is easy to find and affordable. But if you are side stepping using real vanilla beans, you are missing out on some awesome antioxidants.Nature's Medicine Cabinet

Extracts are made from infusing the bean in alcohol for an extended period of time. The process of infusion does allow antioxidants to seep into the alcohol extract so you are losing out on a lot of phytonutrients when you skip using the actual vanilla bean.

Vanilla was traditionally used as an aphrodisiac, and is also reputed to help patients with erectile dysfunction and loss of libido. Because of its calming properties, it’s thought to help reduce inflammation due to fever, and because of its high antioxidant content, may also be effective at fighting off the free radicals that can lead to cancer.

Benefits to the Skin

The benefits of vanilla in skin care products go far beyond the amazing scent. It is also great for:

Healing wounds: Historically vanilla was used to help heal wounds, and we now know that it has anti-inflammatory properties that may help to soothe and calm inflamed areas on the skin.

Antioxidant: As you can see on the chart above, vanilla is a great source of antioxidants. A 2007 study that profiled the extract found that the antioxidants were significant, stating, “The present study points toward the potential use of vanilla extract compounds as antioxidants for food preservation and in health supplements as nutraceuticals.” These antioxidants can also help protect skin from environmental dangers that can accelerate aging.

Acne and Antibacterial: Vanilla can help reduce skin infections and can reduce the bacteria that cause acne.

B vitamins: There are a lot of b-vitamins in vanilla, including niacin, which is a key nutrient in the maintenance of healthy skin. Thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, and pantothenic acid are also found in this tasty extract.

I keep a large pack in my fridge sealed tightly at all times for additions to desserts and even vegetables like my Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Vanilla-Pecan Butter.

Hi Maria! I’m a mid-distance runner/weightlifter, and just ending my first 14 days of the Veg/Egg program. I’ve had to cut my runs short because of lack of stamina since starting the program, and I’ve not had the power behind my workouts that I’m used to. I know that this will pass (I was the ultimate sugar-burner prior), but I’m wondering..should I be even TRYING to work out like normal as my body adapts? How long do you suppose it will take until I feel normal on my runs? I sooo appreciate any insights you can offer. I’m a little nervous about this situation.

It is ok to work out, just don’t push yourself too hard for 2-4 weeks as your body adapts. Then your energy will soar. Also stay hydrated (lots of water, salt and potassium). 🙂

  • Amanda Reed says:

This is fantastic information. I think I’ll print this list out and hang it in the kitchen. Thanks, Maria!

  • Julie says:

Do you have a proofreader? I suggest you get one. This post has many mistakes. I love your content, but your credibility is lowered when you make so many simple grammar and spelling mistakes. (This is not the first time I’ve noticed but I couldn’t let it go without saying something.)

  • I’m a little disappointed to not see cilantro on the list. Is it not as high in antioxidants?

  • Janet t says:

hi maria, guess what I found a tea that has holy basil (tulsi) in it and I snatched it up. it was loose leaf. I thought ths might be a nice way to get some nutrients into me, what do you think? it also has ginger and lemon and it is dryed with no additives, or no crystalized ginger or lemon and it was organic. it was just dried. do you think that would be good too. YOU ARE GREAT MARIA, I WOULD TAKE YOUR TYPOS ANY DAY FOR FREE USEDFUL INFORMATION. thank you for helping me to get healthy. you are very generous. thank you.

  • Janet t says:

hi maria, can you recommend any books on reading about herbs and spices and also their nutritional value. thanks so much. I want to learn more.

  • Wenchypoo says:

Ginger is also an alternative form of Cox-2 inhibitor, so it’s great for those who normally have need of aspirin or Celebrex.

Speaking of inflammation, curcumin (found in turmeric), fish oil, and GLA (from black currant seed oil) help relieve it.

Nature’s aspirin = white willow bark.

Where can I find your AMAZING BREAD recipe?

  • Allie says:

Maria, when is the best time of day to take resveratrol? And what dosing will be effective? Thank you

  • Allie says:

    Hi Maria 🙂

A.) What’s the highest safest dosage of GABA? B.) Can GABA be taken with 5HTP and a probiotic at night? In regards to the first question, I’m a little scared to take the full 2 grams before bed (in order to to raise HGH levels) because when I took a 1 gram dosage I felt very strange for about 5 minutes. I took my probiotic with it that time, so maybe I’ll move the probiotic to earlier in the evening so there’s not too much serotonin being secreted. I’m not sure if that’s even the case lol but for my second question B.) I’m also scared to add in the 5 htp because I’m worried it and the GABA together will be too strong? Not sure if I’m being paranoid or if I actually really do need these supplements in my life. I read about serotonin syndrome and obviously don’t want too much serotonin being secreted! But I want to maximize HGH levels and I want to wake up feeling rested (I don’t have issues sleeping, just issues feeling refreshed in the morning.) Thank you for all that you do and know!!!!!

    Allie

    • Maria Emmerich says:

Hi, It depend on the person and their needs. Proper dosing is done with my health assessment. A typical amount is 750mg. Not sure where you got 2 grams from, that is pretty high. GABA and 5-HTP are fine together and I prescribe this for clients all the time (if not on antidepressants). You do have to monitor your symptoms and adjust as needed as your body heals. 🙂

  • Allie says:

Ok, thank you so much, how much is the health assessment?

  • Carrie says:

Was hoping this post could help… have been on your 30 day advanced and am on week 5- yesterday and today have had a headache that won’t go away- it is behind my right eye brow. Is there anything to bring me relief as I head into day 2 of this headache instead of advil?
    thank you!!
(I do drink pink salt water every morning, drink my water during the day and get potassium. )

  • Joanne says:

    I second that!
