Why We Crave Crunch
The theory why crunchy foods are innately pleasing to our palate is captivating. Crunchy foods add a level of our senses to eating. If you are lucky and are able to smell and taste, you get those (I say lucky because I had a terrible ear infection that caused me to lose smell and taste for 2 weeks! Yikes). You also get texture in your hands and mouth when eating. One thing you may have not thought about is sensual part of the eating experience of sound. The crunchy sensation we experience is more significant for the sounds it makes inside our heads. The internal noises of chewing always happen as we eat, but eating a soft omelet is quite different than chewing on nuts or chips. This is one reason why “You can’t eat just one.” Our neural sensory systems all experience something called “habituation” in which our sensory neurons become less receptive with constant exposure to a stimulus. Pork clouds are just the thing you need.
We all experience habituation to the smell and taste of food as we eat. This is why we over-eat when we are eating at a potluck or buffet… so many choices to keep stimulating the senses. But if you have one food on your plate, your brain gets bored and signals to stop eating. One reason that crunchy foods may have more of an appeal to you lies in the extra layer of your senses when you eat; you may like a particular crispy food because you like the way it sounds in your head. Crispy foods have a special sensory place in the brain. They incorporate hearing into the sensory mix of eating, and it is very likely that the stronger and more varied sensory mix provided by crispiness staves off boredom and habituation while we eat these foods. We also often crave crunchy foods because in Paleolithic days, insects and fresh produce was our main source of crunchy. A soggy vegetable was tossed aside in lieu of a crunchy/fresh one. The problem now is that we still crave that crunch but it often isn’t for a crunchy piece of celery… it is most likely chips or cereal (thank goodness for people like Clark W. Grizzwald who invented “non-nutritive cereal varnish” in Christmas Vacation! So if you are in love with crunch, you MUST try these Pork Clouds!
I’m not one to even like pork rinds. I feel they often have a stale texture with an odd flavor, but not Pork Clouds! They are super fresh and crunchy. They remind me of the fresh chicharrones I had at a farmer’s market in Hawaii.

I love pork rinds! I can’t decide if that’s my favorite smack or maybe sunflower seeds.
I snack on nuts, hard boiled eggs or string cheese. Sometimes a Quest bar. These pork rinds look like a great portion controlled snack!

I rely on crunchy snacks while driving to keep me alert on a long trip. Pork rinds fit the bill as long as there’s water periodically to wash it down. Although not crunchy, cheese sticks are also good until real food presents itself.

Right now it’s pepperoni, cheese, and olives. I am a big fan of pork rinds, though. I am just about to start a job that is manual labor and may not have a lot of time for heating up lunches. looking to stock up on easy, no heating necessary keto lunches.

I realize these are higher carb but as I am nursing and was not keto before I started nursing I am not doing super low carb yet.
I always wondered why you haven’t used Pork Rinds in any of your recipes, now I know why! I feel the same, a bit bland, etc. would love to try these!!! The bland ones are fine to used crushed up in lieu of bread crumbs thought! Thanks for introducing these!!

I like to bring hard boiled eggs, hard salami and pickles when I am on the go
I usually take a water jug and a cooler with me when I am traveling. That way I can have just plain water without paying for bottled water and I pack some fat bombs and string cheese in the cooler. I also pack about 1 ounce of pork rinds with me.
Homemade jerky and peanuts are my usual snacks. I’ve never been a fan of pork rinds, but I’d love to try these!

Pork clouds are a great replacement for movie Popcorn. Salty, crunchy and you can make them warm by heating in the microwave.
Nuts are definitely my favorite on-the-go keto snack. I also write music using a program called “piggytracker” and it lives in my Dropbox folder. So… it’s totally a pork cloud!

I agree!! I need some good crunch now and then and I have been similarly disappointed with the pork rinds from the supermarket – which I feel are fried in bad oils and are often rancid tasting. I would love to try out these pork clouds, they sound like a great LCHF snack !!

I am like you, Maria: I will sometimes eat pork rinds to get the crunch but don’t care for the flavor. I usually use them as the ‘carrier’ to eat sour cream or my favorite caesar salad dressing. I look forward to trying these.
