BROWN FAT

Have you ever heard of “CoolSculpting?” It is a new procedure that is less invasive than liposuction where the treatment basically activates brown fat.

Shaved Ice

There are 2 types of fat in the body:

1. White Adipose Tissue (WAT): WAT is what we normally refer to as “body fat”. We want to burn white fat, BUT brown fat is beneficial because it helps burn calories and burn the unhealthy WAT.

2. Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT): BAT is composed of iron-containing mitochondria (powerhouse of cells), which is best known for creating ATP (energy)…the more mitochondria = more energy!

BAT helps use excess calories for heat. If you use proper techniques, you can use BAT to your advantage so excess calories aren’t stored as WAT which ends up as undesired belly fat. Cold stimulates BAT to burn excess fat and glucose for energy. This is why Michael Phelps can consume over 12,000 calories/day. He isn’t just exercising that much, the cool water of the pool stimulates BAT therefore he needs extra calories to keep the weight from piling off.

TIPS:

1. Use ice packs on the back/neck for 30-60 minutes while relaxing at night when insulin levels are higher and more sensitive. Click HERE to find the one I like.

2. Soak your feet in Ice cold water at night or right away in AM when you first wake up. This will stimulate heat throughout the day.

3. Suck on ice cubes throughout the day. Make ice cubes sweetened with a touch with Everly water!

4. Have a Shave Ice for dessert!

5. Take a cold shower upon arising.

6. Lower the temperature in your house by 5 degrees.

Drinking ice water = burn 60 calories
Sucking on 6 flavored ice cubes = burn 60 calories
Soaking feet in ice water for 5 minutes = burn 90 calories
Placing ice packs on body for 30 minutes = burn 100 calories
Lowering house temperature by 5 degrees = burn 100 calories/day
3 minute shower at 75 degrees F = burn 120 calories

Women typically have twice as much brown fat as men, so take advantage of it!!!

This SHAVE ICE would be allowed on Protein Sparing Modified Fasting Days! Which I enjoy when I do these!

12 years ago, Maria called this practice a “pure protein day.” Back then, we hadn’t heard of PSMF. We just knew the properties of the thermic effect of food and how our metabolisms worked, so we knew this could be helpful for people to lose weight faster. PSMF is becoming more popular and well-known and is a great tool for improving results.

We have just launched an all new Protein Sparing Modified Fast cookbook!  This ebook is loaded with over 47 great recipes and 2 weeks of PSMF meal plans with full grocery lists!

This cookbook is perfect for summer because the recipes are easy, many are grilling recipes and are perfect to get you into your summer wardrobe fast!

I did this exact thing on July 4th! I was at an event with my son and we were sweltering. I had a bottle of Stur in my purse, so I bought two plain shaved ice cones from the vendor onsite and put my own Stur flavoring on them. They were crazy good and a real lifesaver in the heat. The best part is I didn’t have to break my diet!

  • Michelle says:

I just tried Stur for the first time yesterday. I feel like I’m cheating, it’s so good! I need to get it in every flavor.

  • Terri B says:

Hi Maria – I do love my gadgets but I’m out of room in my cabinets. I’ve been saving for a really good blender. Can you make snow cones in your Blendtec?

  • Terri B says:

PS – Thanks for letting us know about Stur. My pantry is starting to look like yours 🙂

  • Lisa Lilly says:

I’m not sure I’m understanding what you’re saying about BAT. Is cool sculpting something we don’t want to do because we want the presence of BAT?

  • Lisa Lilly says:

P.S. I’m also enjoying making shave ice using my food processor and erythritol and extracts and I’ve been loving them. 🙂

  • Linda says:

Hi Maria – Typo alert it’s a Waring tool…. not Warning!

  • Adel De Weever says:

Does Trader Joe’s sell stir? I may be going to the US in August and am starting a list.

  • Adel De Weever says:

I just checked Low Carb Canada and they sell 6 flavors of Stur. Awesomeness!

  • What’s different with this shaved ice compared to blending ice cubes?

  • Robin says:

Not to nitpick, but “snocone” ice is NOT shave ice. There’s a huge texture difference (as you point out between blendered ice and snow cone ice). Shave ice is fluffy, and can be packed quite solid so that the liquid doesn’t flow through to the bottom. (I don’t live in a place where it snows, but it would be like fluffy snow.)

Not to say that this isn’t a yummy refreshing treat…it’s just not shave ice. (And yes, it’s “shave ice” [no “d”], unless you’re on Big Island, where it’s “ice shave” — I have no idea why!)

A number of years ago, one of my sisters gave me a hand-crank shave ice machine that makes something much closer to “real” shave ice. I’ve been wondering how to make my own syrups (like the best shave ice places do here)… I will have to see if I can source the Stur and see what I can do.

And yes, I live in Hawai’i, where shave ice is available at every corner store. 😉

    [/nitpick]

  • Ann says:

Maria…. would you say then that swimming in a cool pool is the best exercise to get rid of brown fat ?
I have access to that and i would LOVE to get rid of this last 10 pounds thats been hanging on. lol
might that be a good solution ?

i am already on 1400 calories a day and very active but the weight just wont come off !

    • Maria Emmerich says:

Yes, that will help. Also, if you aren’t intermittent fasting I would add that. 🙂

      • Ann says:

YEAH ! i forgot to add that ….I AM doing fasting…. in fact….. i was doing an every other day 24 hour fast… a REAL fast…. just water. 6pm to 6am…. BUT believe it or not….. in one week… not a SINGLE POUND HAS COME OFF ! I MEAN REALLY !

i just cant believe it ! i am very strict about my diet….. NO grain… NO sugar….. been that way for YEARS ! and now….. i have made sure not to go over 1400 calories a day and this stubborn metabolism STILL will NOT give in !

i just dont know what else to do ! thats why i asked about the swimming.
i will try adding it….. i hope it works.

this is crazy …..there must be SOMETHING i can do to get off this last 10 lbs.
maybe drop the calories down to 800-1000…. or is that too low ?

dont want to do any damage.

        • Maria Emmerich says:

1000 calories might be good to try a while. Also, keep total carbs at 20g or less.

          • Ann says:

thanks Maria… I forgot to mention THAT TOO…. been keeping the carbs under 20 grams… thats why i am so frustrated by this. i’ll try lowering the calories….. somethings GOT to give here. lol

          • Linda says:

Maybe not enough fat too much protein?

          • Ann says:

Actually Linda….. i dont eat alot of protein….. i do LOOOVE fat bombs and i make up the difference in calories with that. my protein is just where it should be,
my problem is….. my metabolism is SOOO SLOW i think i could exist on tree bark and water forever if i had to. LOL.

my ancestry is from VERY poor people that never had enough to eat….. for GENERATIONS ! I am the first generation that has had PLENTY of food to eat…. so i think i understand how i am made.

lol ….. doesnt mean i accept it….. it makes me mad as all get out sometimes….. but i understand what my body is doing here.

i dont have alot of weight to lose but i am being beaten at EVERY turn.
but… i am NOT giving up….. I’ll get it done somehow.

there MUST be something i am not doing.
i hope the lower calorie count helps…. plus the swimming.

and thanks Maria for your suggestions.

  • Linda says:

Hi Maria – well I guess I need to nitpick too… The appliance is made by WARING…

  • Mary says:

Another new alternative to Stur… I tried Stur a couple years ago but then couldn’t find it. That’s when I found a new product by Wisdom Natural, SweetLeaf Water Drops Stevia Water Enhancer. It too comes in a variety of flavors and has the same ingredients as Stur. Maria, you might want to add to your store.

  • debbie says:

i too am confused about the comment re Coolscupting..is it good or bad?

  • Koshie says:

When I was a little girl, the vendor came to parades and fairs with his giant block of ice sitting in sawdust — and he used an honest-to-God wood shaver to shave the ice to make a sweet treat. Judging by the picture, the Waring doesn’t make shaved ice but rather a finer crushed ice. And trust me, I do know that the finer crushed ice is as far away from true shaved ice as the Waring’s is from your refrigerator crushed ice! Nope, it has been a long time since I’ve even seen a smallish block of ice in the grocery store.
So I freeze water into a block in a clean milk jug, cut away the plastic, and shave it with a dedicated wood shaver. And THAT is SUMMER BLISS! Yup, it is a slower process. It is a ritual that makes memories. Worth it!
