Keto During Menopause
Too many women are being mistreated during menopause with prescription antidepressants and HRT.
The liver can’t convert oral progesterone efficiently, plus most oral progesterone prescriptions are way too high at about 200mg. I had one client gain 40 pounds in a year after starting oral HRT. Where topical creams bypass the liver. Functioning ovaries produce 20mg of progesterone daily, far less than 200mg! A small 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of Progest cream helps balance estrogen dominance. Healthy progesterone levels also stimulate new bone growth, help lower anxiety and increase sleep.
Antidepressants are not a solution to hormonal problems. If you are truly depressed, medication may be the answer, but less than 10% of people truly have a chemical imbalance… so why are 80% of the clients I see on an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication?! Well, low progesterone also is the leading cause of anxiety, insomnia and hot flashes. And estrogen determines fat distribution. To top all the uncomfortable things that can follow menopause, prescription antidepressants cause weight gain, low libido and night sweats… the same things you are fighting because of low progesterone! Low hormone output will also raise blood cholesterol and triglycerides because cholesterol produces hormones. All our major hormones are made from cholesterol: estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, thyroid, DHEA, and testosterone.
If we don’t eat enough cholesterol, our bodies divert cholesterol from our endocrine system to use for brain function and repair. When that happens, it’s almost impossible for our bodies to maintain hormonal balance. Hot flashes, here we come! Healthy cholesterol = healthy hormones!
During menopause, the adrenal glands over already over worked. Many women start to exercise to combat the weight gain but what most people do not realize is that exercise is a stressor, a healthy stressor if done properly, but is still is a stressor and will increase adrenal hormones. This increase in adrenal hormones increase cortisol. Adrenal hormones help women cope with the stressors of life, but during this time, they also provide sex hormones once produced by the ovaries (which are no longer producing them).
Certain nutrients support the adrenal glands, such as B-vitamins are our “anti-stress” vitamins. Menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, insomnia, night sweats, and anxiety are also symptoms of Cushing’s Disease. This disease is when there is over-activity of the adrenal cortex.The adrenal hormones and the thyroid hormones are directly connected. You must take care of your body in order for it to take care of you. Get quality sleep, eat quality food, reduce caffeine and grains, relax… get a massage! 🙂 Cortisol is the stress hormone that alters fat cells and make them resistant to weight loss.
Also, women entering menopause should think again when contemplating estrogen therapy. Too much estrogen inhibits thyroid hormone, which promotes weight gain. This also happens when women who are still menstruating are put on birth control… this further shuts down the thyroid hormone; particularly the utilization of T3, the most active thyroid hormone. Estrogen from outside sources or produced naturally, causes women to be estrogen-dominant. BUT the good news is when you eliminate grains and wheat, too many carbohydrates, and alcohol, you lower insulin. Insulin also makes fat cells and estrogen. By controlling insulin, you help balance all your hormones, which will make fat loss easier and helps eliminate those undesired menopausal symptoms! Just to clarify…the 200 mg dose of progesterone is approximately equivalent to the 20 mg dose of topical. The reason for this is the “first-pass effect”. The liver destroys about 80-90% of the oral dose as it passes through. So you end up with about the same amount to do the job. What is the difference in EPO and Borage Oil? Can I use Borage oil instead of EPO?

Thank you for this information. This post shows/mentions three products, the FemEstro Plex, the EstroFactors and Evening Primrose Oil. I did not see the FemEstro on your Amazon site and the EstroFactors is pretty pricey. I am not sure what symptoms go with which product. I am 51 and stuck in the “week before my period” symptoms. Breast fullness and tenderness, bloating and mood issues. Typically starting a period diminishes those symptoms but not for me anymore. No extra money or health insurance so must chose wisely. Your guidance is greatly appreciated.

What a timely post for me! I just purchased two of your supplement plans – the ones tailored to Estrogen Dominance and Menopause (I’m perimenopausal atm). You advise taking supplements 3 times a day with meals. I only eat twice. Do you recommend spreading the same amount of supplements over the two meals? Or taking a third round with no food?

So, how would you treat supposed “hypothyroid” which is not uncommon for 50 yr old – menopause stage…..?not a true thyroid problem however a high estrogen (unbalanced with progesterone) problem?

Blood tests are not required, but if you do have them I will include them in my analysis. I base most of my analysis on symptoms from a comprehensive online assessment. 🙂

thank you for this post! I was just told Thursday that, at 55, I am finally in peri menopause. I am looking for guidance from people, like YOU, who I trust. Can you suggest any other readings? I’ve only been having symptoms for 2 months, but have put on 5 pounds, while still eating Keto, and an inch on my waist! It took me too much work to lose 70 pounds. I do NOT want to put it back on because of menopause.

Can or should any of these be taken if not menopausal? I’m 41 but certainly have hormone imbalances and insulin issues and adrenal fatique and high cortisol… Over a year of low carb and can not lose my belly fat. My cells just won’t let it go.

maria, since I have been taking supplements based on the personalized plan, I feel great. I have had no problems with menopause. 2 am insomnia and night time hot flashes are getting the best of me. I ‘d like to use the Estrofactors – is one pill a day appropriate, and when is the best time to take it? Maria, I’m so frustrated. I was Keto adapted all last year. The diet worked great for me and I’ve never felt or looked better. I spent the summer in South East Asia and did not stick to the diet. When I returned I gained 10 pounds fast (I am small so 10 lbs is a lot for me). I got back on the diet about two months ago and have only lost 3 pounds. I only want to loose 7 more pounds but they just won’t budge. More than that I have a belly fat I can’t get rid of and cellulite. I’m 41 and not menopausal. I can only imagine it’s hormones. I sleep pretty well, my job is stressful (maybe too much cortisol?) but I also relax and do a ton of yoga. I started taking EPO about 2-3 weeks ago. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I’m wondering if I should try the estrofactors.

I have had my estrogen tested and it is really low and also my progesterone. But I do have a big belly, that’s where I gain all my weight. Is this still estrogen dominance even though my blood tests say it’s low?

I am 52 and have been in perimenopause for a number of years. Switching to a keto diet over a year and a half ago has helped with many of the issues I had. I lost 20 pounds (and have kept it off), I rarely have the menstrual migraines that came every month with my period, no more brain fog, I sleep better, overall energy and focus much are better. I even started jogging three times a week at the age of 51. I’ve never been a jogger in my life! But recently I have developed something new. For the past three months, about 4-5 days before I get my period I get a yeast infection. As soon as my period arrives it goes away. I follow my cycles with the sympto-thermal method (track daily basal body temperature and mucus signs throughout the month.) Those same three months I ddin’t have the traditional mid-cycle 7-10 day mucus patch that would accompany ovulation. My basal body temperature is not shifting as it used to after ovulation – which leads me to believe I’m probably not ovulating anymore. Do you have any suggestions to help with the 4-5 day yeast infection that I’m getting? Thanks!

I am so glad I found your site and now this blog. I could not find the one called sea of estrogens. I am 47 years old and just had a saliva hormonal test, my estrogens are over the chart and progesterone below the chart, so I need to get them into the right places. My Dr is great, she already put me off diary and gluten…I was already 3 weeks eating keto thanks to your book and other sites I found. I am taking DIM and EPA/DHA as well as some folate. Off red meat as well. Would you recommend your estrofactor supplement? I want to get the estrogen down as it should be.

Hi Marie, I’ll be 50 on Sunday. I’ve been doing Keto for almost 2 months now. My body is making changes, but I’ve only lost about 10 pounds. After all the reading I’ve done, I’m wondering if it’s because I’m still taking Prempro, which is a low dose of Estrogen and Progesterone. My Doctor put me on this after I went through early menopause and it’s been really hard to lose weight on any diet. What do you suggest?
