Why I Add Chocolate Caramel LMNT to German Chocolate Pie With a Carnivore Crust

German chocolate pie sounds like the ultimate indulgence—and it certainly can be.

But one of my favorite things to do is take a dessert that traditionally contains a lot of sugar, flour, and empty calories and completely rebuild it using ingredients that better fit a ketogenic lifestyle.

My German Chocolate Pie with a Carnivore Crust does exactly that.

And there is one ingredient you might not expect to find in a chocolate pie:

Chocolate Caramel LMNT.

I normally use LMNT to help keep my electrolytes on point, but I also LOVE using it in recipes. Chocolate Caramel LMNT combines chocolate, caramel, salt, sodium, potassium, and magnesium in one little packet.

That makes it an amazing flavor enhancer for chocolate desserts.

Chocolate + Caramel + Salt Is an Amazing Combination

There is a reason salted caramel and salted chocolate taste so good.

Salt doesn’t just make food taste salty. Used in the right amount, it can enhance other flavors and balance sweetness.

This is especially important with chocolate.

Chocolate has natural bitter notes. A little salt can help balance those flavors and make the overall dessert taste richer and more complex.

Now add caramel.

Chocolate + caramel + salt is basically the perfect combination for a German chocolate dessert.

Instead of adding only plain salt to my pie, Chocolate Caramel LMNT gives me those flavors along with electrolytes.

What’s in Chocolate Caramel LMNT?

Chocolate Caramel LMNT is surprisingly simple.

It contains salt, cocoa powder, magnesium malate, potassium chloride, natural chocolate flavor, natural caramel flavor, and stevia leaf extract.

A full stick of LMNT provides:

Electrolyte Amount Per Full Stick
Sodium 1,000 mg
Potassium 200 mg
Magnesium 60 mg
Sugar 0 g

That means we can add chocolate and caramel flavor without adding sugar.

For a ketogenic dessert, that is a HUGE advantage.

It Adds Caramel Flavor Without Adding Caramel Sugar

Traditional caramel is basically sugar.

To make caramel, sugar is heated until it undergoes caramelization, producing those deep, complex flavors we associate with caramel.

Delicious?

Absolutely.

Great if you are trying to keep carbohydrates and sugar low?

Not so much.

Chocolate Caramel LMNT gives us another option. Its natural caramel flavor allows us to bring caramel notes into the pie without pouring conventional caramel sauce or caramelized sugar into the recipe.

That helps preserve the flavor experience while keeping the dessert aligned with a low-sugar ketogenic lifestyle.

Chart: Traditional German Chocolate Pie vs. My Version

Traditional German Chocolate Pie Keto German Chocolate Pie
Flour-based crust Carnivore crust
Significant added sugar Sugar-free ingredients
Traditional caramelized sweetness Chocolate-caramel flavor without conventional caramel
Primarily dessert calories Can be built around more nutrient-dense ingredients
Salt for flavor Chocolate Caramel LMNT for salt, flavor + electrolytes
Higher carbohydrate Much lower carbohydrate

Exact nutrition will depend on the complete recipe and serving size, but the philosophy is simple:

Keep the experience. Change the ingredients.

Why Electrolytes Matter on Keto and Carnivore Diets

Electrolytes become particularly important when carbohydrate intake is low.

When insulin levels fall, the kidneys tend to retain less sodium. Water follows sodium, which is one reason people often notice a rapid change in water weight when initially lowering carbohydrates.

This is also why I have talked about electrolytes for YEARS.

Sodium, potassium, and magnesium aren’t trendy supplements. They are essential minerals involved in fundamental physiological processes.

They help support normal:

  • Fluid balance
  • Nerve signaling
  • Muscle contraction
  • Cellular function
  • Blood volume

This is one reason I pay attention not only to water intake, but also to electrolytes.

Sodium Isn’t the Enemy

Sodium has been demonized for decades, but sodium is an essential nutrient.

Your nervous system depends on sodium gradients to generate electrical signals. Your muscles need sodium for normal contraction, and sodium plays an important role in maintaining extracellular fluid volume.

This doesn’t mean everyone needs unlimited sodium.

Individual needs vary considerably depending on diet, activity, climate, sweat losses, medications, kidney function, and medical conditions.

But for someone eating a low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet—especially an active person who sweats heavily—sodium intake deserves attention.

A full Chocolate Caramel LMNT packet provides 1,000 mg of sodium.

Potassium Is Important Too

Chocolate Caramel LMNT also provides 200 mg of potassium per packet.

Potassium works closely with sodium throughout the body.

The concentration differences between sodium and potassium across cell membranes are fundamental to nerve impulses, muscle contraction, and normal cellular function.

Potassium should still come predominantly from nutrient-dense foods, but LMNT contributes some additional potassium alongside sodium.

And Don’t Forget Magnesium

Each full packet also provides 60 mg of magnesium.

Magnesium participates in hundreds of enzymatic reactions throughout the body and plays important roles in normal muscle and nerve function, protein synthesis, glucose metabolism, and energy production.

Again, LMNT isn’t meant to replace a nutrient-dense diet.

Think of it as another tool.

Chart: What the Three Electrolytes Do

Electrolyte Important Roles
Sodium Fluid balance, nerve impulses, muscle function
Potassium Cellular fluid balance, nerve signaling, muscle contraction
Magnesium Enzyme function, muscle and nerve function, energy metabolism

This is why electrolytes are about much more than preventing a headache or muscle cramp.

They are essential minerals your body needs every day.

But Does Eating Pie Really “Hydrate” You?

This is an important distinction.

I wouldn’t call German chocolate pie a hydration product just because it contains LMNT!

LMNT is normally mixed with water specifically to help increase electrolyte and fluid intake. When we put it into a pie, we are primarily taking advantage of its electrolytes and fantastic chocolate-caramel-salt flavor combination.

And remember that the electrolytes are distributed throughout the entire pie.

If one packet goes into a pie cut into eight pieces, for example, each slice would contain approximately one-eighth of the electrolytes from that LMNT packet—not the entire packet.

That distinction matters.

The Carnivore Crust Makes It Even Better

I also love pairing this filling with a carnivore crust.

Traditional pie crust is generally made from flour and fat. Other keto crusts often substitute almond flour or coconut flour.

A carnivore crust takes a completely different approach.

Instead of trying to recreate flour with another flour, we can build the crust around animal-based ingredients.

This can keep carbohydrates extremely low while making the recipe suitable for people who prefer to avoid nut and seed flours.

It also provides a wonderful contrast:

Crisp carnivore crust + creamy chocolate filling + caramel notes + a hint of salt.

That combination is hard to beat.

Salt Can Make Sugar-Free Desserts Taste Better

This is another little trick I use all the time.

When you remove sugar from a recipe, you need to think about more than simply replacing sweetness.

Sugar influences flavor perception, texture, browning, and mouthfeel. If you simply remove it, a dessert can taste flat.

Salt can help bring some of that flavor intensity back.

That is particularly useful with chocolate.

Chocolate Caramel LMNT provides sweetness from stevia along with cocoa, chocolate flavor, caramel flavor, and salt.

Rather than adding several separate ingredients, I can get multiple layers of flavor from one ingredient.

Chocolate Caramel LMNT Is More Than an Electrolyte Drink

This is what I love about keeping LMNT in my kitchen.

You don’t have to limit it to your water bottle.

Depending on the flavor, I use LMNT in all sorts of recipes because salt is already an essential culinary ingredient.

Chocolate Caramel LMNT works especially well in:

Chocolate ice cream, protein shakes, cheesecake, chocolate pudding, brownies, coffee drinks, protein mousse—and, of course, German chocolate pie.

You get to use the same ingredient in a completely different way.

Chart: Why Chocolate Caramel LMNT Works in This Pie

Benefit Why I Love It
Chocolate flavor Intensifies the chocolate filling
Caramel flavor Complements classic German chocolate flavors
Salt Balances sweetness and chocolate bitterness
Zero sugar Doesn’t require conventional caramel or added sugar
Sodium Adds an essential electrolyte
Potassium Adds another important electrolyte
Magnesium Adds magnesium without changing the dessert concept
Convenience Flavor + salt + electrolytes in one ingredient

Dessert Can Be Fun AND Functional

I don’t think the goal of healthy eating should be eliminating every food you enjoy.

I would rather ask:

How can we make it better?

Can we remove the sugar?

Can we reduce the carbohydrates?

Can we increase the protein?

Can we replace flour with better ingredients?

Can we add nutrients without sacrificing flavor?

That is how recipes like my German Chocolate Pie with a Carnivore Crust are born.

We aren’t trying to pretend pie is steak.

It’s still dessert!

But that doesn’t mean we can’t make smarter ingredient choices.

Final Thoughts

Chocolate Caramel LMNT is one of my favorite little tricks for taking a sugar-free chocolate dessert to another level.

The combination of cocoa, chocolate flavor, caramel flavor, sweetness, and salt naturally complements a rich German chocolate filling. At the same time, a full packet provides 1,000 mg sodium, 200 mg potassium, and 60 mg magnesium with zero sugar.

When that filling is paired with a carnivore crust, you get something that tastes incredibly indulgent without relying on the flour and enormous amounts of sugar found in a traditional German chocolate pie.

And that is my favorite kind of recipe.

GERMAN CHOCOLATE GANACHE FILLING

  • 2 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate chopped fine
  • 1/3 cup powdered allulose
  • 1 packet Chocolate Caramel LMNT
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter (or butter flavored coconut oil)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons stevia glycerite (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

COCONUT PECAN TOPPING (NOTE: feel free to double the topping for extra goodness!)

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut flakes toasted
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans toasted
  • 3 tablespoons powdered allulose
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 3/4 teaspoon stevia glycerite
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Grease an 8 inch pie pan (and line with parchment paper in the bottom if desired) and set aside.
  • To make the crust, place the butter into a large saucepot and heat over high heat. Stir often. After about 3 minutes, the butter will start to froth up and brown flecks will appear. Keep whisking and once the butter is medium brown, lower the heat to low and stir in the milk powder, and sweeteners. Whisk the mixture well while gently heating. Whisk until the mixture is well combined. Remove from heat. Place the mixture into the prepared 8 inch pie pan. Set in the fridge to cool.
  • To make the German Chocolate filling, place the chopped chocolate, sweetener, LMNT in a blender (click HERE to find my favorite blender and Discount CODE! Makes a GREAT gift!). Pulse for a few seconds or until the mixture is very fine. Add the eggs and pulse until well combined.
  • Place the coconut milk and butter in a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Remove from the heat and, with the blender running on low speed, slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the blender jar. Add the stevia glycerite and vanilla. Puree until light and fluffy, about 1 minute. Taste and adjust sweetness to your liking.
  • Pour the chocolate filling over the chilled crust. Place in the fridge to set completely before topping with coconut pecan topping.
  • To make the coconut pecan topping, in a small saucepan melt butter and heat over medium high heat while whisking often and the butter turns golden brown. Add the allulose, cream, stevia glycerite and vanilla. Stir until thick and golden, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and fold in toasted coconut and pecans.
  • Once the chocolate filling is completely chilled and set, pour the cooled coconut topping over the top. Serve chilled.
