Testimonies of the Day
Another great 30 day Accelerated testimony: “I got compliments on my HAIR today at work. There is NEW hair growth, it’s not as lifeless. I laugh now and feel happy.
I’m firing on all cylinders for the first time in I don’t know when, I’m losing weight and have energy but most important my mood is the best it’s been in, forever. It took such a huge leap of faith to buy your services. I’ve been down the rabbit hole so many times I could cry! I went off the HCG early to start your program and boy, I am glad I did. Now I eat and feel full. I feel awake when I should feel awake and sleep great when I need to. Today my time of the month came and NO pms which was awesome.
It dawned on me when I was at the grocery store the other day, I thought to myself, wow….I don’t need or want half of this stuff in here anymore!! I really like this and feel like the recipes you supply are enough for me to sustain on and be happy with.
I think people at work are wondering why I’m so chipper and laughing a lot too. Haha” – Donna
Photo Testimony: Do you or someone you know suffer from an auto immune disease? Alopecia is an auto immune disorder is close to my heart. One client really sticks out in my mind. Kiki, was a middle-aged woman who came into my office. I saw her often in the weight lifting class that I take three times a week, but I never talked to her. It was impossible to ignore that she always wore a bandana on her head, but I never knew why. Her story is that in her 20’s she started losing her hair and by the time she came into my office, it was completely gone.
I love this story because Kiki was a professor so I never saw her at the gym during the school year. After 6 months of my anti-inflammatory, keto-adapted, gluten free diet, Kiki walked into the gym with a bbandannaon like usual, and ran up to me with a huge grin. She ripped her bandanna off and had a full head of hair. She said with delight, “I had my first hair cut in 10 years!” As a woman, I can’t imagine. I use to let those “bad hair days” upset me, but after meeting Kiki, that just seems silly.
She thought I was crazy when I told her that she had a food allergy causing her to lose her hair. She is a total believer now! She was so excited that she had her first hair cut in over 10 years!
We eliminated certain foods and added in some specific supplements to help with skin and hair conditions.
Zinc and Hair Loss
Do you crave something sweet after a meal even though you are full? Do you have white spots on your nails?
These are signs of a zinc deficiency!
Beef is a tasty food for increasing your Zinc levels because ounce for ounce it has more zinc than many other foods. It is also filled with iron which low levels can also cause hair loss; and, if you get quality grass-fed beef, it also contains four times the amount of vitamin E as feedlot animals (a deficiency in vitamin E can also cause hair loss).
Now, there are 2 different types of iron:
1. Heme iron: form of iron that comes bound to heme proteins and is easily in your digestive tract. (found in Red Meat)
2. Nonheme iron: form of iron not bound to heme proteins, less easily absorbed. (found in spinach and other plant sources)
To read more on iron, click HERE.
But let’s get back to zinc. Why zinc you ask? Well, you lose a lot of zinc as you sweat, so athletes listen up! Low zinc can also cause extreme cravings for salty foods and sweets after a meal.
Hypothyroidism is a common and well-documented cause of hair loss. The thyroid is a zinc “hog” and it is required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, and deficiency of these can result in hypothyroidism. On the contrary, thyroid hormones are essential for the absorption of zinc, and therefore hypothyroidism can result in a zinc deficiency. The hair loss attributed to hypothyroidism may not improve with medication unless zinc supplementation is added, as demonstrated in my practice. NOTE: Do not increase zinc too fast or it will cause nausea.
A zinc deficiency is just one cause of hair loss, I see many many reasons why this could be happening. It really is a puzzle that I can help you figure out! I know that you most likely want more information in this area but it is really difficult for me to write all the reasons why hair loss happens on this blog post because if you try to self diagnose and take a bunch of supplements without knowing your lab numbers, overdosing is dangerous.
If you need more help with the complicated issues of the thyroid or hair loss, I would be honored to help with a consult. Start feeling like the amazing person you are meant to be today!

The slow cooker Italian Beef recipe is in my cookbook The Art of Healthy Eating Slow Cooker!
My friend, Marilyn, asked me to bring a copy of my slow cooker cookbook to the yoga class we take together because she was giving it as a wedding gift along with the slow cooker from my amazon.com store. What a great gift idea!
What type of iron do Cast Iron pans have and is it absorbed or good for one?
Maria, I am not sure if I missed the explanation somehow, but why is the seasoning called fat flush? Thank you.
Because herbs and spices help cleanse the liver (prevent fatty liver). 🙂
What about milk thistle and/or dandelion supplements?
Those are ok options. 🙂
How much zinc does an 8-year old child need each day?
Here is an ok chart. 🙂

What would be an appropriate amount of zinc to supplement with for hypothyroid conditions? Thanks!
It can depend on several factors but I would have client work their way up to about 30-50mg.
Hi. I have the Slow Cooker book on Kindle. Where is the Italian Beef recipe located? I cannot find it in the table of contents. Not in the Italian section, nor the American section. Where do I look? Thank you.
Sorry, this is the Spicy Beef Stew from the Slow Cooker Cookbook. I updated it above. 🙂
oh my is that beef recipe a new one it looks so mouth watering good.
Yes, it will be in my new cookbook. 😉
When will your new cookbook become available and what is the title? I have and consistently use all of your books except the one on sweets. Thank you so much for your creative and knowledgeable presentation of how to prepare and eat healthfully.
Thank you!! This will be my first with a publisher and it will be out in the spring/summer. We don’t have a title yet. 😉
Could you explain why you chose these herbs in particular for a fat flush? 🙂
Hi:
I was wondering how you add the lemongrass. Do you chop up fresh lemongrass or is there a powder form?
Thank you.
I use something like this. 🙂

Hi Maria- I’m trying to share info with some friends who are saying the sugars listed on food labels are already calculated and accounted for in the listed carbs but I believe you state otherwise. Can you advise and point me to some online resources that support your position? I recall in one of your books you said to get the true carb count you need to add the carbs and sugars together to get the true total carbs — please correct me if I’m wrong.
Many thanks for all you do to help others!
The total sugar grams should be included in the total carbs. There are a couple ingredients like maltodexterin that can raise blood sugar but doesn’t have to be counted so you still have to be a detective on ingredients. 🙂
I’m not sure where you’re getting your information, but great topic.
I needs to spend some time learning more or understanding more.
Thank you for magnificent information I used to be looking for this information for my mission.
Hi Maria,
Do you recommend deep frying food or is the high heat a problem? I’m considering using red palm oil or coconut oil.
Many thanks in advance.
Both are good options as they are very stable. 🙂
I have been on ME diet for 4 months now and recently noticed severe hair loss, so i thought of suplementing with biotin and zinc, only to realize there are many forms, which should i get: glycinate, picolinate, gluconate???
I like these. 😉

In this recipe you mention a 1/2 packet of pure organic stevia. Is this the ground leaves? Or something else? Could we use Swerve or something else?
You can use any natural sweetener to taste. 🙂
Marie,
Love your crock pot book! I made the Spicy Beef Stew yesterday .Delicious!
I have also made the Balsamic Chicken and Reuben Chicken…Again both delicious. Can’t wait to continue trying recipes in the book.
Great Book!
Thank you!
I think I am deficient in Low-Carb Butterfinger Cheesecake . . .!
Ha! Funny. 🙂
What if hair loss has only begun since beginning the keto diet 6 months ago?
In that case I would do a personalized HAQ. I can help with certain supplements.
Hi Maria,
I have experienced a lot of hair loss in the last 2 years. I purchased your book Keto-Adapted and in there it says to take L-Glutamine. You suggested I believe 3 grams a day. The L-Glutamine I purchased is 500 mg. Should I be taking 6 of these a day?
Thanks so much for all your help! We love you and your wonderful recipes!
Thank you!
I would check your ketones with taking it. It can raise blood sugar. But If it doesn’t take 6 a day.
