30 Day Ketogenic Cleanse

I struggled with food and weight throughout adolescence and into adulthood. I remember sitting in the library at age 16 and trying on my friend Lisa’s jacket. All of a sudden, I heard a boy sing, “fat girl in a little coat.” That started my wake up call.

Fat and frustrated, I finally decided to add in the nutrition part to my exercise and practice all the information I was about to preach to the world once I graduated. I was a fat “restrictor” and exercised constantly. After decades of being told by marketing geniuses that “fat free” was the way to lose weight, eating real fat was scary for me. Once I started adding fat to my diet, I slept deeper, felt calmer and better in that first week that I ever had. Now, I understand the biochemical reasons why restricting fat is not the answer. All my life I was taught that good-tasting foods made you fat. It is almost too much to imagine that you can have total satiety while enjoying butter, avocados, grass-fed cheeses and meats, and even sugar-free cheesecake. But it has been over five years and my body feels amazing and I never feel deprived. I traded in a lifetime of over-exercising and fat restriction for a nutrient-dense, fat-filled diet and lost weight in the process.

My weight loss was a hard goal to achieve. But once I found the secrets to healing my mitochondria with the right foods, sleep, exercise, water and overhauling my bathroom pantry, it became easy. I learned the secrets of the hormone insulin and the lesser-known hormone leptin. And by transitioning toward a very low-carb, high-fat (not just high-protein) diet, I had re-sensitized my biochemistry to these essential hormones, which turn off severe food cravings.

Best of all, my diet makeover required a lot less of the self-deprivation I was suffering from when I wasn’t losing weight. The nutrient-rich, relatively high-fat dietary approach I have developed utilizes exotic, little-known replacements for typical high-glycemic starchy foods and sugar and is what finally helped me achieve peace with food, something I never imagined possible. Even more weight came off than I was originally aiming for.

By following the ketogenic lifestyle, you too will understand how to eat to balance your hormones, sleep better, feel better and lose the weight! These tasty and exotic keto foods will keep you satisfied and enhance your physique. You will even get to enjoy desserts again; after all, we also need to enjoy the sweetness of life.

 

 

When I was a young teenager I suffered with severe acne. My mom took me to the doctor and without asking what my diet looked like, he put me on a strong dose of antibiotics. I can now pinpoint that moment as having a huge negative impact for not just my physical health but also my mental health.

Sure, I was happy the acne was gone, but my moods started to down-spiral. I was always a really happy kid, but I remember that it was at about that time that I started to experience feelings of sadness. Just because of an antibiotic?, you might ask. Yes, the powerful antibiotics that teens are being put on for acne wreak havoc on the gut where serotonin is produced. Our gut health directly correlates to our moods. What is so detrimental is that I was on antibiotics for years without realizing the damage they were doing. I trusted my doctor. This long-lasting downhill spiral of my gut health causes intense sugar cravings and caused me to gain weight. The weight further lowered my happy-go-lucky spirit. Man, if my doctor just would have asked what I ate and knew that the cereal and skim milk that I started off each day with were the culprit of my acne, I wouldn’t have gone through all of the issues I did. But, of course that brought me to where I am today!

But there are sadder and more serious stories in my family’s medical healthy that, along with my personal story, have made me the passionate messenger of healing with food that I have become today.. I was a lucky little girl who had two fantastic grandpas. Grandpa Vince, my dad’s father, was a kind man who I believe gave me the work ethic that I have today. He owned a plumbing and heating business. He loved to take me fishing and teach me how to garden.

My grandpa Vince survived his first heart attack at age thirty-two, but with the diet that his doctor recommended it is no wonder his heart never healed.  He eventually required heart surgery at age forty-five, then another one at age fifty-two. At that point, the doctors gave him five years to live; he made it nine more years and died at age sixty-one on Thanksgiving morning. My dad was the one who tried to revive him and he still mentions to this day that he believes he could still be alive if hadn’t received so much bad nutrition advice from his doctor, such as to never eat eggs, butter, or saturated fat. He was living off fake butter substitutes and popcorn.

My mom’s father, Grandpa Jerry, was a totally different man. He was a musician and he always made me laugh. I feel honored that I was able to play the guitar alongside him at every holiday get-together up until the day he died from type 2 diabetes.

In Spring 2016, I spoke at a large conference in my hometown and the dietitian from the hospital spoke right before me. I had to plug my ears so I didn’t say anything offensive in front of the crowd because she kept saying to cut out all cholesterol and saturated fats. She also said how vegetable oils and canola oil is a better replacement.

When it was finally my turn to speak, I realized that my presentation would contradict everything she had just told everyone, so I started by saying: Did you know that breast milk is mainly made up of cholesterol and saturated fat? Yep! I don’t think that this marvel was put into place to harm babies. It was put in place to help babies grow and form healthy hormones. Cholesterol is needed to make hormones (everything from thyroid to sex hormones) and to form healthy brains! It helps form the myelin sheath around the cells to help with communication of the nerve cells. The saddest part of this story is that she was the dietician at the hospital nursing home my grandpa Jerry stayed at before he passed away from type 2 diabetes.

Through my writing and teaching I hope to reach as many people as I can, in the hope that the ketogenic solution will keep you and your family members from suffering needlessly like I and both of my grandpas did.

        I’ve always struggled with diets because I instantly feel deprived and start to miss my favorite foods. I made it to day 4 of whole 30, we went paleo for like a week, we’ve tried low fat low carbon diets briefly. I can never stick with anything because it’s so different from the food I enjoy. Then we tried keto, and it’s so delicious you honestly can’t even tell you’re in a diet! I think the biggest thing for me is that it doesn’t require me to cut all dairy.

      I would love to win this book……I’ve heard about and I’ve tried the KetoDiet but something’s not clicking. I know my hormones are out of wack (as I pop a NatureThroid as I write this)…….I woke up sweating from night sweats……..so I’m looking for anything to balance my hormones and help me feel better.

      Additionally, not everyone has Facebook; I understand it’s probably the most popular social media site but I’d rather use Instagram.         Agreed, I’ve been on keto for about four months now and it’s been stellar for my chronic daily migraines but I’m not losing much weight. I went from using a medication every day to about four times per month. Much better than anything a neurologist has prescribed! But I’m wondering why the weight loss is coming harder for me. I’ve lost and regained the same six pounds over and over unfortunately. I’d love to win this book to help me understand why.

          I’m trying to address chronic headaches, an injury from a car wreck making my neck uncomfortable but I’m still a functioning busy RN, wife and parent. Have type 1 DM, past history of Lyme disease with lots of antibiotics. Since its impossible to isolate anything as a single
          Cause of the headaches, my nutrition is the best place to focus right Now. The low carb lifestyle makes the most sense for DM control, but hasn’t been so hard to stick to. This book would be a great resource .

    I have tried many diets over the years but none were sustainable, or healthy! And always the weight came back. Once I learned about the keto way of life I lost 30 lbs in about 2 months! I really couldn’t believe how easy and quick it was for me. My horrible sweet tooth cravings were tamed after only a couple days, so I am not tempted by all the sugary health killing things around me. And I am not always hungry like I used to be, snacking all day long. I used to hate clothes shopping, nothing looked good. Now it’s fun!

    After I discovered your site in July, I immediately began following your recommendations to become keto-adapted and have since lost 40+ pounds. For most of my adult life, I struggled with weight. Even my wedding day was not as happy as it could have been because I was so self-conscious and embarrassed about my appearance. But now I’m looking great, and even better, feeling great! My husband is constantly remarking about how amazing I look. Indeed, he is also adapting to the keto lifestyle and is losing weight and getting healthier. Our 10-year anniversary is approaching, so I plan on taking my oversized, tent of a wedding dress and getting it altered into a sexy cocktail dress for a fabulous night out with my husband! But more importantly, I plan to live a long and healthy life with him and our two kids. Nothing is better than that!

    I started eating Keto after I had weight loss surgery at the recommendation of my Dr. I was in severe pain from arthritis and fibromyalgia. My kidneys were starting to function poorly from diabetes and high blood pressure. I could not even walk to the door if a store much less shop.

    Our keto journey began in August 2015. My husband’s best friend was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes a few months earlier. He was overweight and started to follow a ketogenic diet. The weight just fell off of him and he was no longer Type 2 Diabetic within a few short months. After a visit with another friend of ours we found out that her husband, an ultra marathon runner, also followed a ketogenic lifestyle…so my husband started reading. And reading. And reading.

    My husband and I had both been overweight for years and I had done my share of diet plans but we never did any of them “together”. He wanted to try keto but I was still skeptical. He had fully committed to keto by mid-August 2015…I played along, but I wasn’t taking it that seriously. By December 2015 he had lost about 30 pounds while I had only lost a few pounds. Around that same time, I had my semi-annual visit with my oncologist due to a breast cancer diagnosis in 2014. I mentioned to her that my weight was a concern because I had gained so much during treatments and that my husband had started a ketogenic eating plan. She just stopped and looked at me and said “DO IT, YOU WILL LOVE IT!”. So I officially started keto on December 28, 2015…and shortly after that I found YOU and your wonderful recipes!

    Fast forward to December 10, 2016…my husband has lost over 100lbs and still loves everything about the ketogenic lifestyle, especially all the new clothes he got to buy! I have lost 80lbs and haven’t felt this amazing, well, ever! I saw my oncologist again last week and she almost had me in tears telling me how happy she was for me. I have energy again, the joint pain from all that extra weight is gone, and I am sleeping better than ever before. I still have a bit more weight I would like to lose, but your recipes and blogs keep us both motivated…and we are doing it TOGETHER! Thank you!!!

    I m 5’10” tall and have weighed close to 200lbs and as littles as 125,lbs, a victim of many “diets” that work for a while but are not a way of living just a way of eating. Being a Ketoterian is a lifestyle, a passion, almost a religion. I am now at 130lbs and while that is wonderful, what is really wonderful is that I feel amazing. Joint pain I had is gone headaches that I have had fir years due to stress are gone, I’m sleeping better than I ever have before, I’m back exercising and excited about it for the first time in over a year, and my fiance says I am happier and nicer (menopause has been squelched). While I would certainly like to lose a nit more fat and gain more muscle, I think Keto’ really is a focus on health, over all health, and one of the best side effect just happens to be weight-loss.     Please allow me to explain: I made the switch to Keto in January 2015. Unfortunately I found Keto before I found you. I had struggled with weight and eating healthy since High School, eventually losing 60 lbs with a proactive LCHF approach and a ton of working out. I turned to Keto to prepare for a kidney transplant. My Dad is a type 1 diabetic, in 1995 he received a kidney and a pancreas from an anonymous donor whose life had been cut short in a car wreck. My Dad followed the counsel of his (field leading) Doctors. He was right back to the horrendous high carbohydrate low-fat diet all the Doctors swore was healthy, and thus he was right back to ravaging his own body. The pancreas failed in 2009, and he went back to on Insulin. The kidney began to fail in 2012, and by the time he was willing to admit this to his family that the kidney that had given him life was dying, the organ was functioning around 6%.

    I knew, somehow, that my kidney would save him. I began preparing for the surgery and I decided that because this was something I would only be able to do once in my life I would do everything in my power to do it well. I poured over pubmed for hours and eventually I began to find a common thread. The Ketogenic diet was associated with all the goals I had. For 6 months I tested my blood sugar, and my urine ketones multiple times each day, I used a Ketogenic – Intermittent Fasting protocol with a 3 hour weekly carb-up. My partner Sarah, thought I was insane, she would shake her head at the constant blood testing and strange consumption of massive amounts of fat (coconut oil by the spoonful). I was also using a very intense 8 session/week training protocol in order to go on the table with the strongest kidney and the leanest body possible.

    My Mom started calling me muscle man, because the minimal amount of fat I was carrying prior began to melt off me, FAST. Everyone wrote me off as crazy. My initial round of tests was all over the charts because I didn’t yet know that a long term fast could affect all my blood tests. I will never forget sitting in the waiting room at the University of Minnesota and the Nurse sprinting out to find me after seeing my test results. My blood glucose was 41, she thought I was about to pass out. I was fine, and I wasn’t hungry, and I hadn’t eaten in 48 hours. I upped my carbs (from <10g to 80g) for a week and got re-tested. None of the Doctors were willing to address my deep ketosis test numbers, however my second set of numbers was phenomenal.

    I got cleared to donate the kidney and we set the date. July 14, 2015. On the day of the operation, the transplant team runs all the blood tests again as a failsafe. I was in my pre-operation consult with the lead surgeon and the anesthesiologist, oddly neither of them wanted to talk about the surgery all they kept asking me was what I did to stay fit, both of them told me multiple times "you literally have the best bloodwork I have ever seen" My kidney function was 160% of what you would expect for someone my height and weight. My Dad's lead surgeon came into my room a few hours after the transplant was finished, he told me "your Dad has better kidney function now than he has had since before you were born."

    I was 32 years old.

    After the transplant, my family slowly stopped thinking that I was a kooky nutcase with a conspiracy theory about the medical establishment. Obviously I was onto to something, but Keto seemed very extreme to them after watching the cold calculated precision and testing protocols I had used. I on the other hand moved toward a more paleo diet, but it didn't take long to desperately miss the way I had felt while I was Keto. I decided to switch back to the diet I had used prior to the transplant. This is when I found you Maria! I was reading an article I found on Dom D'Agostino's blog out loud to my partner Sarah, she had recently found a lump in her breast and was extremely concerned about cancer. The article was highlighting the Otto Warburg theory that cancer cannot live without sugar, and addressing the rise in cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes as sugar consumption rises. Suddenly Sarah was very interested in this strange diet that flew in the face of everything she had ever been taught about healthy eating.

    This was my opportunity, and I seized it! I had my copy of Quick & Easy Ketogenic Cooking 2 feet away on my kitchen counter, and I handed it to Sarah. Sarah poured over it all day, and my life has never been the same since. The next evening Sarah looked at me and said, "I want to do Keto and I can do it Maria's way"

    Since then, it has become much easier for me to espouse the benefits of the Ketogenic diet. I've given half a dozen copies of that book to friends and family as gifts, and it is always the starting point I give people when they want to go Keto. I couldn't convince my Mom to give it a shot, so I just convinced her personal trainer instead, and now guess who is going Keto?

    I'm excited to get my hands on anything you write not only because I love the recipes but because when I first read Q&E KC the only thing I could think was "Wow this book is perfect, I don't think I've ever done anything as well as this book was written" Recipes, Macros, Substitutes for Allergies etc, The Science of it, where to buy keto ingredients, there is literally nothing missing.

    I'm very thankful for the work you've done and the wonderful impact it has had on my life and I look forward to reading everything you put out there.

      That’s so interesting as I tried to give my kidney and my 24 hour urine was twice the amount as the normal person so it threw off my creatinine. I think this is related to Keto diet. Don’t you?

    I was starting to have some strange diabetic symptoms, even though I wasn’t considered diabetic or even pre diabetic. My toes would go numb, my joints would ache, and my feet would get cold. 3 years after going exclusively keto, all that has stopped. I can out run teenagers (I’m 50) I can almost leap tall buildings without running! lol… I feel so much better, and the added benefit of being scientifically sound just makes my day, every day.

    I started the keto diet about a week ago and am trying to really get completely “on the wagon”! I have been low carb for a while now and had a stressful job that I quite in order to try and get healthy.     I’d love to win this. I’ve struggled with my weight ever since i got married and got on the birth control pill. I went from a size 4 to a size 12 within 6 months. I’ve since gotten off the pill and had 6 babies, and am at my heaviest weight ever.       I would love to win this book. This lifestyle is amazing, not just for weight loss but overall health. My asthma improves, acid reflux/heartburn goes completely away, cholesterol numbers improve, blood pressure numbers drop.     For the last 12 years I have suffered from endometriosis, PCOS, and infertility. My hormones have been so low, even with medications and treatments. This has caused me to have chronic insomnia and exhaustion. Every doctor I would go to would tell me that they’re not sure how to help, they had maxed me out on hormones, and I was still at levels lower than menopause.

    I have been following the keto diet for the last 3 months, and I am happy to say that my hormone levels are increasing! Slowly, but any increase is a miracle at this point.

    My husband and I started the ketogenic lifestyle in June and I can honestly say we are new people. He was 375 and I was 240 and now we have collectively lost 120 pounds.     Love your recipes! I’ve been moving lower in carbs in my diet for a while, but I haven’t fully tried to go ketogenic. But I think it might be a good choice for me. Both my mother & grandmother died with late stage Alzheimers and heart issues. They followed what was considered a “healthy diet” for their generations. Lots of whole grains before whole grain was even in style, and low fat. It was clearly the wrong answer. I hope to have a better outcome with the info surfacing about positive results with low carb eating. Would love to win your book!

    I started Keto a couple months ago. My son was 6 months old and I hated how I looked but more importantly how I was feeling – bloated, irritable and always had heart palpitations. Within a week I started to feel better, had more energy and the palpitations were gone. I’ve lost 24lbs so far and have another 30 to go before being at my pre-pregnancy weight from 9 years ago. The baby weight excuse is getting old – my eldest is nearly ten! I worry I’m hitting a plateau and over the holidays but made some poor choices so I would love this book to get on track. I love how strong I am feeling and clear headed and I look forward to this journey and teaching my football boys about healthy living. My toddler has epilepsy and I hope this will help him too.
