5-HTP (do not take with an anti-depressant)
Numerous double-blind studies have shown that the amino acid 5-hydroxytryptophan (“5-HTP”) is highly effective in easing anxiety and depression. However, over the past decade or so, more and more studies are coming out that show 5-HTP may be a valuable weight loss tool as well. Craving for carbohydrates and binge eating is associated with low serotonin levels. 5-HTP increases serotonin/decrease cravings/increase mood, decrease PMS. 5-HTP is a metabolite of the amino acid tryptophan. You may know tryptophan as the agent in turkey that makes you feel like taking a nap after Thanksgiving dinner (in addition to a full belly). 5-HTP is a direct precursor of the important neurotransmitter serotonin, which is secreted in response to mood or emotion swings. Serotonin soothes and calms and brings about feelings of contentment. You have a greater level of satiety. It also helps with QUALITY sleep. Most people GAIN weight in the summer because they don’t get 8 hours of sleep. This causes the leptin hormone to malfunction (feel like a bottomless-pit after a night of no sleep).
