Testimony of the Day

“I just wanted to send my thank yous. I have been following you for a while, have all of your cookbooks and love your recipes. Recently (the last two months), my weight loss stalled. I’ve lost 70 lbs since last year and have another 50 to go (down 110 lbs from my heaviest weight). My husband has lost 75 lbs.

I was keeping my carbs under 30g but didn’t pay any attention to my protein and fat.

1 1/2 weeks ago, I started tracking everything. 5% carbs, 15% protein and 80% fat. Although my fat intake isn’t quite there, I (counter-intuitively) upped my fat dramatically. Lo and behold, I’m losing again!

I work, I go to school full-time (graduating in December…wahoo!!!), I’m a wife, mom and grandma. Life is super busy but I make sure to make the time to cook. I spend Saturday mornings baking. Through Maria, and further study, I have become very aware of what is in food and make my choices accordingly. Please, don’t ever feel defeated. I didn’t think I could do this but I did. I’ve heard it from others…If I can do this, so can you! This is now our lifestyle. This is not a “diet”. We will be eating like this for the rest of our lives. We’re losing weight, our BP is down, we’re getting off of meds…and we’re looking good too! I just want to say thank you to Maria again! She’s made this transformation “easy” through her writings, her explanations (it’s easier to make choices when it makes sense and Maria is great helping it make sense) and all of her wonderful recipes!

On a side note, we also have a 14 year old son.  In the last year of making these changes, he has only lost 5 lbs (he was pretty heavy as well)…however, he grew 5 inches.  He went from 5’7″ and 195 lbs to 6’0″ and 190 lbs.  He’s looking fantastic!  Very proud of him as well.

I’ve spent decades overweight, following a 1200 calorie diet, low fat and whole grains. Amazing that now I’m eating almost 2000 calories, low carb/high fat diet, I’m still shedding the weight! Thank you for all of your advice! This has been an amazing transformation of my life!” Maryann

Yep! Too much protein turns into sugar too! This isn’t just a “low carb” diet, it is a “keto-adapted” diet! A fat-burning diet! To get started on your journey to health, click HERE.

What if I told you that everything we have been taught to eat in our diet has been completely wrong and our typical American diet is causing inflammation. Inflammation is the stem of most modern diseases. I hear from many people that they are on an “anti-inflammatory” diet, but are they really? An inflammatory diet is cutting all sugar and when I write sugar, I also mean starch. Starch and “complex carbohydrates” are just glucose molecules hooked together in a long chain, the digestive tract breaks it down into sugar. So a starchy diet is the same as a sugar diet.

Another shocker is that you can not store protein and too much protein turns into sugar too! You may be wondering what’s left to eat? No starch and limited protein? Fat, and lots of it. It is considered a ketogenic diet. You will start to hear more and more information about ketogenic diets and the powerful healing benefits they have. To many clients I see remain slaves to the belief that glucose is the dominant source of fuels, so they live their lives in a fear of running low. The truth is, fat is the ideal energy source and has been for most of human evolution. In fact, it is this blind allegiance to the “Carb Paradigm” that has driven so many of us to experience the vast array of metabolic problems that threaten to overwhelm our health care system.

A ketogenic diet isn’t something new that has been recently formulated; people have been on a ketogenic diet for virtually three million years in which our brains were nurtured and evolved. Now the human brain is not only shrinking, but brain atrophy is the norm as we age and get plagued with diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

People mistakenly think that they need to eat less and exercise more to create a calorie deficit in order to lose weight. This is not how diet and exercise helps with weight loss. A well-formulated keto-adapted diet along with proper exercise builds muscle and muscle builds mitochondria. It is in the mitochondria where fat is oxidized so you can keep your cells and liver insulin sensitized. Weight loss and health is about healthy mitochondria and about controlling hormones and specifically insulin.

This is not a diet, it is a lifestyle. By eating this way, you will begin to heal your cells and will keep evolving your body into the happy and healthy person you want to be. This book is filled with the most impeccable nutrition information to fuel your cells. My passion goes beyond explaining the ‘why’, I am a master in the kitchen and love food. My keto-adapted recipes at the end of the book tie all the nutrition together so you can become keto-adapted faster than ever.

Learn how to fuel your cells properly so you can love and adore your body; it is however the most precious thing you will ever own.

Discover the amazing health and healing benefits to this well-formulated keto-adapted lifestyle and what most “low carb” diets are lacking which cause the undesired effects like lethargy. Other shocking facts covered:

-What foods turn on the “fat switch”

-How to heal autoimmune disorders with diet and therapeutic supplements

-How to exercise with keto-adaptation

-Cleansing the liver properly so you can increase moods and burn fat faster

-Supplements to speed up keto-adaptation

Thank you Maria. You’re making people’s lives better by doing what you do. You should be SO proud of that! I love your books and can’t wait for the hard copy of this one!

  • knmkendall says:

I just purchased the Keto-Adapted ebook but I didn’t get an email confirmation link to download the book. Is there a different way to get to my download? I received a paypal confirmation email, but nothing else. Thank you for your help! I’m looking forward to reading your new book!

    • cemmerich says:

Paypal is having some delay on processing. As soon as they get it figured out you will get the email to download you ebook. Sorry for the delay. Thanks!

  • J w says:

Is this going to be available in a paper back or hardback book?

  • HW says:

    Hello Maria,
I attended your class last weekend and received lots of good information. I am a slow starter to things and asked you what 5 things were the most important to start with. I also forgot to ask with all of the supplements you talked about and in your book, if you were to start with one supplement and/or probiotic, which would be the most important? Financially, can’t start with all but would like to start one.

    • cemmerich says:

Thanks! Diet is #1. You have to increase the fat, moderate protein and greatly reduce carbs. In this book I talk about some of the things that can help you adapt as well. 🙂

    • Linda says:

      Hello Maria,
How do you attend classes? I have been doing Paleo for 3 months and would like to say that I have the
Great Results others are having but unfortunately that is not true. Perhaps I need more help. And for the first time ever I was told I have hyperglycemia. How can this be when I have eaten no grains, no dairy, no sugar and even very little of the suggested sugar subs? I would like to know the five most important starters, too, because apparently I am missing something. HELP!

  • Joanna says:

I don’t have a paypal account so was hoping to buy the new e-book through Amazon. I live overseas, so need the kindle version to save on shipping and to prevent it getting lost in the mail. But I know you prefer to sell directly. I’d be happy to pay by credit card or send you a cheque (all the way from Ethiopia!). Are either of these possibilities? If not, when will the kindle version be up on Amazon?

  • Barbara says:

    Hi Maria,
I had a urine test done today and my ketones are positive- plus 4. Would you expect to see this in someone who is following your recipes? have been doing so for about four to five weeks

    Thank you

    • cemmerich says:

4 mmol? Yes, that is a good state of fat burning. But, the urine strips are not very accurate. I talk about this in the book. The blood testers are much better. 🙂

  • Louise says:

I wanted to order your book, “Ketogenic-Adapted”, and was not able to find it on Amazon. Is it only available through your website? I was not successful doing it there either 🙁

Thanks so much, I really look forward to being able to buy it.

  • Wanda says:

I was wondering if I could pre order the keto adapted book in paper back? I have all your other books and love them. I like having the actual book:)

  • Egil says:

    Hi there,
    A couple of questions:
1- Does the universal ebook format work on kindle?
2- Can we see a table of content?
    Thanks a lot

    • cemmerich says:

Yes, here is how you get it on your kindle:

Here is the table of contents. 🙂

  • Jennifer says:

First of all, congratulations on “Gotcha Day” to your whole family. How those babies have grown!

Thank you for writing this latest book. It is exactly what I need! Following a low carb, grain-free diet is great for my blood sugar, but I haven’t been able to lose much weight. I suspect that this book will help me change all that.

  • Angie says:

    Hi Maria,

I just purchased this book and I did a quick skim through it and I can’t wait to read it calmly during my Thanksgiving break. You are such an amazing person and you have help me so much. Thank you!

  • Kim says:

I just purchased the 30 day accelerated program, will this book contain info NOT in the 30 day? Thx!

    • cemmerich says:

Well, you should have all you need to succeed with the 30 day accelerated plan. This book just puts everything I know in one book. 🙂

      • Cynthia says:

Having purchased both, I’d say purchase both. There is info in the book that I haven’t seen consolidated anywhere else. Cheap at half the price. Thinking about buying the dairy-free menus.

  • Susan says:

Hi! The book (paperback or hard back) is not availabe (or I can’t find it) on Amazon. Do you know when it will be available?

  • unterderlaterne says:

Many posts here asked you weather this book will be available in book-form. I would like to know also.
Please Maria could you address this question? Thank you! Barbara.

  • Indira Williams says:

Hi there! Well, I just purchased this book via my iPad following your link from Facebook and guess what?… well, I do click on the “click here” to download Keto-Adapted but it does not download it. It freezes. I check my kindle app and my books app but the book is not there. How can I download it into my iPad (either my book or the kindle app? I do not want it in my computer since I use my tablet way more often than my computer. Thanks in advance!

    • Indira Williams says:

I got it! Instead of using the link that pops after paying with my Paypal account I went and used the link you sent me to my email account. that one worked. Thank you again!!

  • Nancy M says:

Will the book be available in a hard copy any time soon? I do not own a reader. Thanks

  • Caroline says:

Maria, I just purchased your new book!! I can’t wait to read it!! I am going to get this right one of these days and I am not giving up!! Your amazing support is/will certainly get me there!! Thanks for all you do for me and everyone else trying to get healthy!

  • Roxanne W says:

It’s always great to see the pictures and videos of your family. You all look so happy ! I would love to win the ChocoPerfection bars. My latest favorite recipe is the ‘Eggplant French Fries’ – dipped in egg, & then covered in almond meal & spices. The first time I made the recipe, I peeled and cut the eggplant into regular shaped French Fries. Delicious! The second time, to speed things up, I cut the eggplant into disc shapes, leaving the skin on. I decided to substitute the cayenne pepper with two spices from a favorite cracker recipe: garlic powder and onion powder. Since you mentioned they were even better heated up the second day, I cooked them for 20 minutes. These are A KEEPER – just enough of a crunch to satisfy – crunchy on the outside and silky on the inside (can’t believe I’m eating and loving eggplant). Thanks for another ‘healthified’ recipe Maria!

  • Lina says:

Waiting to order the softcover book!!! Thanks Maria!!

  • Diane says:

Could you make a healthified “Blommin Onion”? (or onion chips)
This new Book will be the perfect Christmas or Birthday Present, I
    LOVE IT!
    Thanks for everyting!

  • Alli Parnell says:

It’s so true. I had plateaued after two years of eating paleo and then eating what i THOUGHT was the “the Maria way”.. which was really my own version – high protein, moderate fat, low carb. Could NOT figure out why I had stopped losing – and actually had started gaining. And more interestingly, as the heaviest weight lifter in my BodyPump class, I had to go down on my weights slightly, and that bothered me. I was only half trusting the Maria way because I was still afraid of fat. I have since DOUBLED my fat intake, cut my protein down to a more moderate amount, and all of a sudden I am losing again. And the keto stix are pink again! It’s amazing. My energy is so much better, and I can see my muscle definition again. Maria, you do know what youre talking about, and many of my friends are being recruited to your way after asking what I’m doing. Thank you thank you.

  • Philis says:

Looking forward to the book, Maria. I have tried it before with uncomfortable results so hope to find some clues in this book that may apply to me

It is always discouraging to me that eating any treats puts on weight for me. I can usually have a t. or 2 of 1/2 Almond Butter & 1/2 coconut oil, but cookies, etc. do me in.
***Any hope for me in that regard?

Because of another trial … i went off Armour Thyroid for a month. Many issues got me back on. Including a sudden 4 – 5 pound weight gain.
** Do I have to do something special to get that off again?

In the meantime I have looked on different occasions for the day of eating posted for Craig. I have not been able to find that since. And if there was one for you, can not find.

**Could you tell me how to view those?

  • Jennifer B. says:

Will the paperback or hardcover be available in time to give as a Christmas gift? I already got a Kindle version for myself. 🙂

  • TKarpen says:

I just finished the book. I have been eating clean for a couple years and tried elimination diets to identify food sensitivities and this book opened my eyes to why my current healthy diet still might not be working. I want to take on this nutritional change but am totally overwhelmed with information. Plus your recipes all have dairy, eggs and almonds which I am supposed to avoid. How on earth do I get started? Where do I begin?

  • Brittney says:

I just finished reading your ebook and what an amazing amount of great information!!! I’ve only started my journey and I was confused by some things in the book? You mention overeating 1-2x/weekly with 300-500 kcals and a very limited amount of vegetables you allow yet in you recipes you use most non starchy vegetables. Are those vegetables ok? Also where are these protein days coming in the picture?

Is there a place that actually lays out the plan and what your supposed to be eating a touch more clearly? Your incredibly knowledgeable and I want to do this right!! Thank you so much!

  • Megan says:

Hi. I’m looking to buy in store or order online paper back copies of all the cookbooks. Do you know where in Canada they are available? I can only get the ebooks off of amazon, which I love! But I really want hard copies also. Do any of the other Canadian Maria fans out there have any ideas?

  • Megan says:

I have all of your books including the new one. I’m currently on week two of your accelerated program and wanting to include my small family on this journey with me. My spouse has almost zero body fat already and he spends a lot of time in the gym trying to build muscle and gain weight. I also have a 20 month old son. Are there any chapters in any of your books that can help me meet their individual needs with diet and supplements? I know protein needs are met at .5-.75g per lbs of lean body mass, im just unsure of fat and carb consumption. Should they be consumming more than my recommended 30g of carbs per day? Thank you for your time! Very much appreciated!

  • Kim says:

Maria, would you recommend a ketogenic diet to someone with autoimmune disease (lupus, to be more specific), that doesn’t need to lose weight, or even needs to gain a little weight?

    • cemmerich says:

Yes! I have worked with many clients in that situation and gotten amazing results treating a wide range of autoimmune issues. 🙂

  • Karen says:

Hi Maria & Craig… Is the paperback version available now? If so, how can I order it? I’m in Australia and can’t wait to get my hands on it! Thanks.

  • kerwayne says:

If I purchase a course can i view more than once ..what limitations are there?

  • Katie says:

I really enjoyed reading your “Keto-Adapted” book on Kindle (I also own “Secrets to a Healthy Metabolism”.) I realized in my reading that I was eating more protein than fat. As I increased my fat and decreased my protein I have been having loose stools (sorry TMI). I was just wondering if my body is having a hard time with this much fat? In increasing my fat I have added coconut milk. Other fats include olives, avocados, coconut oil and olive oil and animal fats – bacon, red meat.
Also, which cookbook would you recommend for someone getting started with the Keto-adapted way of eating?

    • cemmerich says:

It takes a little time for your body to adjust to the increased fat intake. You can also use dandelion and ox bile to increase bile production.

I think my slow cooker book is a great option. 🙂

I have read many posts on your site and purchased your book on metabolism. Im looking for information how to become keto-adapted and what it means. what to eat and not eat. Is that information on this site or do I need to purchase one of your books to get that information?

  • Lisa Reinhardt says:

Hi, my husband is diabetic and I am gluten-free. Will this plan work for both of us?

Also, I’m getting ready to order the new e-book and the crock-pot recipe book – would you recommend both to me?

  • angela says:

I have your other books and was wondering how this book is different from the others? Aren’t all of your books ketogenic?

    • cemmerich says:

Well, I think this one gives a much clearer picture of this lifestyle. I have learned a lot of science since my Metabolism book (which advocates 25-30% protein which I now know is too high and will cause blood sugar increases due to gluconeogenesis). 🙂

  • Kathy says:

I have T2 diabetes and recently read your Keto Adapted e-book. I highlighted practically the entire book! The information you impart is so helpful and easy to understand. I started a ketogenic diet a few months ago and am amazed at the results. I’m seeing my fasting BG fall below 100 for the first time in 15 years! My need for meds has deceased by over 75% (including discontinuing insulin) and my energy is through the roof. Thank you so much for all you do to heal diabetics with proper nutrition. I just wish I knew this decades ago! After this experience (without support from my doctor, mind you), I am reluctant to believe anything he says about diabetes management. If it were up to him, I’d still be on insulin and taking 3 oral meds, while getting worse! Now I only require 1/2 of the lowest dose of Metformin before bed, and my need for that might disappear with time and healing, too! Eating the Maria Way is a miracle!

  • bels says:

    Hi Maria,
Just wondering if you could give me some advice please? I have been on keto since april this year with very little progress in losing weight. I have 5% carbs, protein is 0.8 x ideal weight and try to have enough fat although when I eat which is twice per day with IF I feel extremely full. Am I doing something wrong?

    • cemmerich says:

Well, I would keep carbs to 20g per day or less (total, not net). Then maybe try moderating protein more (shoot for 50-75g a day). Then just keep the fat intake up. 🙂

  • migraineur says:

    Hello Maria,

I have bought a couple of your books on kindle recently plus keto clarity. I’m not done reading yet. I’ve read about keto diet & tried implementing them with no success. My goal is to get healthy, treat my chronic headaches & migraine and lose body fat. I’m a 33 year old female, weight 54 kg, height 153 cm, body fat 38%. My problem is that after a couple of days on keto diet I get very bad heart palpitations. They are bad to the point that I cann’t sleep. I do get heart palps around my period & at mid period and after eating high fat or high carb meal. I still cannot figure what causes them & non of the doctors I’ve been too was able to see anything wrong with me. I do have doubts that I have estrogen dominance. I have been paleo for a couple of years now but still have problems with gaining weight easily. What should I do to order to be able continue the keto diet & get rid of palps.

    • cemmerich says:

This is from low electrolytes. Make sure to get extra salt, potassium and magnesium along with lots of water. Also, lower caffeine intake as some people get more sensitive to caffeine while eating keto. 🙂

  • Betty says:

Hi Maria, I attended your recent webinar online. I’ve been Keto for about 10 weeks. I keep carbs below 20g. I am coming from the GAPS diet so was already eating pretty healthy and using stevia. At about week 8, my body shifted and I went into becoming fat-adapted. I felt so terrible. I had lots of nausea and no appetite and loose bowels and lots of fatigue. I backed off he L-Carnitine a little too. I often cannot hit my macros because I’m just not hat hungry. I have lost 10 pounds which is he first time in my life I’ve ever lost any weight! 10 more to go. BUT I have NO energy. Where is this energy I hear praised on the Keto diet? I can barely walk a mile without getting very winded and fatigued. What is fatigue an indicator of? Thanks.

    • Maria Emmerich says:

It will come! This typically means you are dehydrated. Your liver releases much of the salt (and associated water) it holds onto with higher carb diets. In the meantime make sure you get lots of water (at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces a day) and add extra salt and potassium. It usually only takes a couple weeks and you should start seeing your energy soar. 🙂

I got your cookbook 2 weeks ago and am in love. I am making at least 1 recipe a day (from the book or your blog), and am having a blast. It’s a fun challenge. We haven’t had a “non repeat meal” yet. My family loves it.The best lo carb cookbook and blog ever. I can’t decide what cookbook to get next, with winter coming maybe the slow cooker but I love Jimmy Moore so…. Thanks so much for all your work, you are greatly appreciated in our home. Favorites so far-Asian Lettuce Wraps, Banana Cream Pie, Fish with Avocado Sauce and Nutella Cupcakes.

I loved the book, I got it on Audible. Yet I’m going to have to review the book on Goodreads not as the 5 star it should have but 1. What why 1 you ask? The recipes aren’t in the PDF. I’ve gotten many books like Abel James’s The Wild Diet and others they all had the Recipes from the book in the PDF. I would change my review if this is fixed but till them it’s kind of a wast I’m not going to try and write down what Satauna Howery is saying.

The support that the Emmerich Team gives is priceless !!! I just have to remember to “stay connected” as there are so so many distractions most discouraging from people who are sadly ignorant or people who are sadly unsupportive due to their own lack of interest to improve their health. I regret NOT staying connected during holidays as I ate “crap” bisquick biscuits and pancakes!!!!!! I started to feel bad noticeably and started to think how I can stay on track and not let it happen again and then the next week The Emmerich Team sent out a zero carb pancake recipe !!!!! I can fight the urge to choose crap when I remember that you guys have a “healthified” (I call it “LEGAL”) option for everything I could get tempted by. Thank You from the bottom of my heart. I am back in ketosis and aspire to stay connected as much as i need ot to stay on track. If you think of it, I would love to hear from you how you have been able to be consistent with the ketogenic lifestyle. I imagine it is such a support for the whole family to be on board 🙂 But, if you have a family who is not so fortunate as yourselves I sure could use some tips 🙂 God Bless You Both.

How do I respond to the naysayers who say that 3-5 meals that are lean protein, low/no fat, and often include “healthy whole grains ” works for them? There are several people at the gym who eat this way when cutting for a competition and I am stumped as to why this way of eating, along woth their training schedule, seems to allow them to get ripped, but DOES Not work for me at all. Do they simply have less metabolic damage?

Well, that sounds a lot like the diet Bob Harper had. That didn’t work out too well for his health.
