Testimony of the Day

This testimony is from one of the Webinar class participants from my Maximize Your Metabolism class from last Sunday night:

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!  My first suggestion was going to be to have these (classes) more often, but I saw this morning you have another one on the 13th and I am already signed up!  Yeah!

Also, I know you are busy, but I wanted to tell you really quickly that you have been a miracle in my life. I will spare you the details, but after two weeks of following the meal and supplement plan you provided for me I am a new person!  In one day you diagnosed my issues that doctors couldn’t figure out over the last 20 years.  Who knew my issues were hormone related?!  For the first time in years I finally feel balanced and happy.  I can never thank you enough.  I have been telling all of my family and friends about you.

The webinar last night gave me that little boost of encouragement to continue with your plan.  It was just what I needed. I have devoured all of your books (multiple times) and I am looking forward to your new one.  There is something about hearing you live though that really gives me that extra boost.

Thank you for being such a blessing (and answer to prayer) in my life! – Cami”

Oil Pulling

I know that this sounds crazy, but swishing coconut oil in your mouth for a few minutes a day is an extremely healthy and tasty daily regime that I like to practice. It is extremely easy too; place a tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth and swish it around as if it were mouthwash (if it is solid, it will melt in your mouth). Just like brushing your teeth, when you do something 16 days in a row it becomes a habit! My suggestion is to toss your mouthwash filled with chemicals and replace it with a jar of coconut oil.

Here are some of the reasons why you should start oil pulling today:

1. Removes bacteria, parasites, and toxins that live in your lymph system. Coconut oil in particular have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and enzymatic properties which is why I suggest pulling with coconut oil over other oils. It helps kill Streptococcus mutans, an acid-producing bacterium that is a major cause of tooth decay. It also clears up Candida, which can cause thrush.

2. It relieves congestion and mucus in your sinuses and throat.

3. Re-mineralizes teeth and strengthen gums.

4. It clears up skin issues like psoriasis because the pulling detoxes toxins which boosts the immune system.

Coconut oil serves several purposes. Its butyric acid is known to increase T3 uptake by glial cells. It has a general pro-thyroid action, for example by diluting and displacing antithyroid unsaturated oils, its short-and medium-chain fatty acids sustain blood sugar and have anti-allergic actions, and it protects mitochondria against stress injury. So if you are like me, get yourself a gallon since you will be using it so much, it helps save money. I get mine HERE.

Flourless Vanilla Bean Torte with Brown Butter

Ingredients

CAKE:

  • 1/2 cup butter or coconut oil, softened
  • 1 1/3 cups Natural Sweetener or equivalent
  • 1 vanilla bean split and seeds scraped
  • 5 large eggs separated
  • 2 1/2 cups blanched almond flour
  • 1 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/4 cup lemon zest (optional)

BROWN BUTTER GLAZE:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup Natural Sweetener
  • 1 vanilla bean split and beans scraped
  • Slivered almonds to decorate (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325 F.
  • Line the base and sides of an 8 inch round cake tin with baking paper and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, place the butter, natural sweetener, vanilla seeds and mix for 8-10 minutes or until pale and well combined. Scrap down the sides of the bowl.
  • Add the egg yolks into the butter mixture, continuing to beat until fully combined.
  • Add the almond flour and mix until smooth, then fold ricotta in (and lemon zest if desired).
  • In a separate clean (dry) bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  • Gently fold the egg whites into the cake mixture. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake tin, smooth the top.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • Allow to cool completely in the cake tin.
  • While cooling, make the brown butter glaze.
  • Place the butter in a saucepan and heat on high for about 5 minutes. The butter will start to sizzle and fluff up. Watch for brown flecks (not black!) and remove from heat. Once the butter is brown, whisk vigorously while adding the sweetener. Add the vanilla seeds. Cool slightly so it thickens a little (or it will leak off of cake). Having a very cold cake will also help the brown butter to harden faster for a nice frosting.
  • Drizzle over cooled cake. Slice and serve.

Making homemade ricotta is VERY easy. I have a slow cooker recipe for organic ricotta in my cookbook The Art of Healthy Eating Slow Cooker. Homemade ricotta topped with my homemade marinara sauce (also in The Art of Healthy Eating Slow Cooker) is one amazingly easy side dish or snack!

Maria, this cake truly looks TO DIE FOR!! Absolutely am going to make this today!!
Also, thank you and Craig so much for everything you do!
    Much love from Germany!

  • Wenchypoo says:

(swish…swish…swish) Is THAT what oil pulling is? I had no idea–I thought it was some wacky New Age thing, like ear candling or something. It just so happens that I had the coconut oil out to make a batch of avocado brownies for lunches, so I too a spoonful for myself and began swishing.

Coconut oil is also good for relieving hot flashes, so ladies 50 and over, here’s your RELIEF!

  • Paula says:

Do you swallow it or spit it back out like mouthwash? Doesn’t really say.

  • Eliza says:

This recipe looks AMAZING! I can’t wait to try it. Also, I started oil-pulling today at your suggestion! I like it already 🙂 A fabulous looking recipe AND well-founded health advice that’s easy, affordable, all-natural and kind of fun? Thank you for all you do and for making some of it available online. I love your books and this site. You are wonderful at what you do!

  • Susan says:

I started oil pulling a few weeks ago. The sources I found said to swish from 15-20 minutes. I have only been able to go 13 minutes. It has removed the plaque from my teeth and that’s a blessing for certain.

    Paula, you spit it out.

  • arlene says:

Oil pulling can loosen caps, crowns and fillings, so be careful if you have a mouth full of dental work. I wish I’d known about oil pulling before all that work was done!

  • Laura says:

Spit it out in the toilet so you don’t risk stopping up your sink pipes should it harden in there! I’ve been doing this for about 3 weeks and I love it!!!

  • Aimee says:

I have been wanting to try oil pulling for some time now, but have hesitated due to my fillings. Do you think they’d cause the fillings to come out? All your recipes look so lovely! We are slowly trying them out! Thanks for sharing!

    • misty says:

Aimee…I did some oil pulling more than a year ago. I chipped my front tooth when I was a child and after a couple weeks of oil pulling it fell off. I can’t be certain that it was because of OP but I have heard others say the same. I’m still bummed. 🙂

  • Melissa says:

Do you and Craig want to adopt a 29 yr old? ;o)

  • Eric says:

I live in a rural area, and have a septic system. I worry that spitting all that coconut oil down the drain every day will clog the system. I suppose I could spit it into a bucket and dump it in the woods, but… ugh. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • jessie says:

I have just also found the oil pulling and its certainly makes you well on top of the world afterwards. This cake is heavenly, and a must try, tomorrow.
love your recipes, a question your bread have you tried whipping the eggs white before adding to the bread mix, just wondering whether it would make the bread a lot lighter, similar to the bought bread. Just wondering.

  • Carol Lovett says:

I have done oil pulling in the past and it does make my mouth feel soooo clean. I need to make a habit of it.

  • Peggy Deichelbohrer says:

Would it work to use coconut cream instead of ricotta?

  • Danielle says:

If I can’t find vanila beans, what is the pure vanilla extract equivalent measurement? Can’t wait to make this and try the coconut oil pulling. That sounds really interesting.

  • Helga says:

I am from Germany but have lived in Tennessee for 30 years. The cake looks wonderful. One of my issues is that when I eat things made from mainly almond flour, I get an upset stomach. It seems that it is too rich and hard to digest. Do you have any words of wisdom for me?

  • Tara says:

Anyone know if oil pulling affects fillings?

  • Sharron says:

Wow….was all set to consider the oil ‘pulling’ (thanks to Wenchypoo for clarifying what ‘pulling’ actually means – I was about to ask!)…until I read the part about the potential problems folks with dental work might encounter. My mouth is an allsorts of fillings and crowns, and the last thing I need is another trip to the dentist! 🙂 How unfortunate for me! 🙁

  • Claudette Melanson says:

Wow…didn’t know you could make your own ricotta! Maria you are a wonder!

  • Cynthia says:

When I buy one of your classes for 25$ can I watch it more than once? Is it a one watch deal or will I have the possibility to watch it a few times if need be. Thanks for the info.

  • donna says:

So if you have fillings should you not do oil pulling- or just occasionally? Thanks for your help..

    • cemmerich says:

Not sure, there seems to be conflicting information out there. Some sites say if your filling are good (not poorly done or loose) it isn’t a problem.

  • TK says:

Hi! If you use your tongue to move the oil around and don’t do a lot of hard swishing I wouldn’t be afraid of it. I have a crown and am going to try it. I have used CO on my toothbrush a lot and rubbed it around on my gums b/c I knew about the great antiviral properties, etc. Didn’t know about pulling toxins and the like. Going to email you Maria – time for me to get serious!

  • Darlene says:

Maria, can you please clarify how long you are supposed to “swish” the oil? Someone commented 15-20 minutes; that seems like an awfully long time and nearly impossible! Thanks~

    • cemmerich says:

Yes, longer the better. Try swishing for at least 10-15. Do it while doing something else like vacuuming or something. 🙂

  • linda says:

Maria, what about using Red Palm Oil rather than Coconut Oil for pulling? By the way, thank you so much for the information that you provide. I tried pulling with Coconut Oil yesterday for the very first time (had never heard of this) and found that my persistent sinusitis seems to have drained already! And I’ve been using all sorts of other possible remedies. Haven’t been able to swish for more than 5 minutes yet, so I did it three times. Thanks again.

  • Margarita says:

I have a question about thyroid, is there a way to replace the hormone naturally if you do not have a thyroid? I am on medication for this. I read about all the healthy foods that help with thyroid levels but for someone who has had theirs removed can this possibly supplement the hormone without the meds? I mean I am on a natural (I believe its natural, Armour)one already, but can we achieve this through foods and would we still benefit from foods that help thyroid? I hope you understand my question, it may be a little confusing, sorry 🙂

  • France says:

Maria, do you squeeze out all the liquid from the ricotta when you make this? I’m thinking that might be a good idea? Contemplating the recipe but the last thing I made with ricotta went a bit floopy on me….
I may make my own, but I wanted that torte TODAY! 😀

  • Chipper says:

Is there a dentist in the house?
Can someone explain why pulling will destroy dental work? Does anyone understand how that works? Is it a reaction to the oil versus dental compositions?
I have implants and crowns. I cannot afford to risk the thousands of dollars they cost but would like to use this for gum protection and all around health. Someone also asked about thyroid issues but didn’t see an answer.

    • Helga says:

I asked my dentist for her recommendation and she had never heard of it! I’d like to know too if it would impact my “precious” crowns and fillings!

    • Margarita says:

That was me, about the thyroid. I have been checking everyday, lol, to see if someone could answer this, since I have not had any luck finding the answer on my own. I know coconut oil is good for thyroid function and that is why I asked the questions I did. But, alas, I think that question does not seem to have an answer, I looked all over the internet and I keep getting the same results about foods for thyroid levels are for people who still have them, not for people who don’t.

  • Jen says:

I made this Flourless Torte over the weekend, and it is undoubtedly DA BOMB. So moist, flavorful and just sweet enough, without being TOO sweet. It reminds me of an Italian Ricotta Pie, or similar recipe. I’ve made a lot of your recipes and nearly always been highly pleased but this one is one of my favorites. Thank you!

  • Pam says:

    Hi Maria,

My hubby and I just tried doing the coconut oil rinse…after we did it though we started to wonder whether we should use the virgin coconut oil or if refined organic coconut oil would be fine as well…would you let us know if you get a chance? Thanks!

  • France says:

Ooh! Made this cake, without the glaze, and it’s AMAZING! WOW!!! (DA BOMB is RIGHT!!!!)

I also tried the oil pulling and gosh, it’s really hard at first on the mouth, my cheek muscles were tired, and all of a sudden I had a gag reflex. I guess practice makes it easier. I’ve been wanting to try it for a long time too…

  • Darlene says:

My question is, why is this called a “flourless” torte, when it has almond flour in it? 🙂

  • Cindi Began says:

This one was SO GOOD too! I appreciate all of your time/effort/and $$ you spend coming up with these (and all of your) recipes!!!! And I read about oil pulling …. gonna try it!

  • Dawn says:

    Hi Maria,

Do you know what causes tonsil stones? Do you think oil pulling would help keep them from forming? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thank you for all you do!

  • jessie says:

Thanks for this recipe Maria, I have finally gotten around to making it but not with homemade ricotta, as time poor, also we dont have access to Swerve confectioners here in Australia I have tried but not available unless its under a different name substitutes would be invaluable, please suggest. The cake came out light and not too cheezie beautiful even for breakfast, I misread the rec ipe and added 6 eggs and still worked out very moist. As with all new recipes practice makes perfect, will keep trying to perfect. Carmel butter sets it off with the bit crunch. Any suggestion on substitute sweetner would be appreciated as I do have trouble with sugar. Thanks Jessie

  • Sonia says:

    Hi Maria!
I want to make this torte but I really dislike ricotta cheese. Is there any possible substitution?
    Thanks! 🙂

  • Anita says:

I made this torte last night and all I can say is wow! It may not make it to the event it was made for!

    • Sonia says:

I don’t like ricotta cheese – in fact I can’t stand its texture in my mouth – and I wrote Maria asking for a substitution – she replied she didn’t know any – then I made it using cottage cheese instead, which turned out AMAZING. It was supposed to be for Thanksgiving, but my husband couldn’t stop eating that… so I showed just the pics to my guests (it was so funny!) and promised a new one for next day… 🙂 And the next try I will make one using cream cheese and see if there is any difference from the one with cottage… 🙂

  • Tatti says:

I made it for our Christmas dinner today! Wow! It turned out amazing. The whole family loved it. I made mine with farmer’s cheese. Everybody said that it tastes kind of like cheesecake. My husband said this torte will make perfect strawberry shortcake. Next time I will make strawberry sause fot it. Thank you, Maria! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  • Patricia says:

Can coconut flour be used instead of blanched almond flour? What about regular almond meal/almond flour…would it change the nutritional value too much?

  • melissa says:

Maria– This is wonderful! Everyone loved it! So thankful for your recipes. I own all your books. I don’t think my weight loss would have been possible without you. Thank you for everything!!!

  • AlaskanAnnie says:

Could I make this with cream cheese instead of Ricotta?

  • AlaskanAnnie says:

I’m wanting to make this cake today. Can I substitute cream cheese for ricotta?

  • AlaskanAnnie says:

Thank you… It didn’t show that my comment was present so I re-wrote it… sorry :/ I can be technologically challenged. 😉 The other question I have is that if I wake up but don’t have time to work out in the morning until my kids nap time should I skip taking L-Carnitine?

    • cemmerich says:

It is up to you. I would still take it as it is great for our cells. 🙂

      • AlaskanAnnie says:

Thanks for answering that. I purchased your accelerated meal/health plan a while back and I wasn’t sure if it was important or directly linked with working out in the morning. Also, I made the torte yesterday and there NONE left. It was awesome and the cream cheese worked great as a substitute.

  • Heather says:

I too have several fillings, not mercury. Can oil pulling be a benifit if done 1-2 times a week?

  • Ty says:

I made and ate this torte today. OH MY WOW! Having something this delicious in the house is dangerous. It changes relationships…. I’m certain I would turn my grandma over to the Feds for a piece of this cake if I had to. #ByeGrandma
